Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

2020-01-23, 13:19 PM

When I first got my unit, it was obviously missing keystrokes.  Letters and spacebar.  The space bar was most obvious.  I would agree with some of the recent posts that lately it has been hit or miss.  Some days are great (like now), others are worse and it'll miss keys.  I have not had my laptop serviced and it came with the Dolby Atmos keyboard.

I have not called Lenovo on the phone, just posted on here due to the intermittent nature of things.  I have not replaced or done anything with my computer.  At one point, the keyboard froze up and was stuck "pressing" the down key, although nothing was pushed.  I restarted and everything was fine, but my bluetooth was missing.  It couldn't detect the card at all.

At that point, I started really worrying.  But I took the back cover off and pushed on the bluetooth card to make sure it was seated.  Restarted and everything was fine.  That was weeks ago, and the keyboard has been pretty good since also.  Do I think they are related?  Probably not.  Did some software update without me knowing?  Maybe.  Was an intermittent contact goofing things up?  Maybe.

Again, some days the keyboard acts weird (as does the mouse), where it'll get choppy.  I'm assuming there is something going on underneath that particular day straining system resources.  I think what Lenovo has to do is prioritize the input interrupts or something so that this weird interaction is decreased.

I spoke to support this AM. They *stated* there is a BIOS fix for this in the pipeline, due sometime in February.

My laptop was purchased early Dec 2019. The A key is the worst for me. I also have the Dolby Atmos on the bezel around the KB.

Dropped 4 A's just typing this post.

:smileyfrustrated:

interesting how shattered the support is about this and how some of them state it's not even known issue and on the other hand someone in the support knows there is a bios update incoming.

And the best part is when I registered to post what support told me my laptop dropped the A in my user name. Was supposed to be DevHeavy...

I'd call this a fail but my keyboard would probably eat the A..... ?

When I contacted support this week, they jumped instantly to "we need to replace the keyboard." They were clearly working from a script that had no questions or options after describing the symptom of keystrokes randomly not being processed. I agree that communication between Engineering and Support appears to be lacking. I would expect Lenovo to have an internal KB and for support agents to utilize the KB (and Engineering to populage the KB with information about a pending BIOS update); otherwise, Lenovo is spending time and money on fixes that won't really fix the issue.

Today there was a Windows update which was named as Synaptics driver update and also on the Vantage there was a Synaptics driver update. I installed both but it's too early to say anything. I'm pretty confident that the Synaptics drvers have something to do with the keyboard. (missed "i" on the drivers)

Synaptics makes the touchpad. Not the keyboard or controller.

It's hard to believe this issue is still on-going because this laptop has been released for many months now.

Why does such an issue still exist? I can confirm I received my laptop just recently and am plagued with the same missing keyboard issue. One of the reasons I went with ThinKPad is because the keyboard is apparently the best. So far all I've experienced is missed strokes and a very high level of frustration. It feels nice but not when I have to backspace EVERY sentence to fix a missed character.
