Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

2019-11-26, 20:15 PM

I have noticed the missing key presses happens much more frequently when the cpu is underload. I am a software engineer and I use intellij. I noticed it happens a lot in intellij. It happens everywhere to be honest. But just seems to get worse during heavy cpu use. But I could be wrong.

@ nicholasq

Yes I can confirm that. One example is Notepad vs Word where more keys seems to miss in Word as it's heavier than Notepad on the CPU side. One day I searched "laptop missing keystrokes" and there were some Dell laptops which use to have this kind of problem and it seemed to fix after CPU graphics driver update. There is a newer driver available from Intel but it can't be installed as it's in somekind of conflict with the OEM platform. I assume Lenovo needs to sign the update and release it via Vantage or something.

But as said keys are missing more frequently under load. And if I stop typing in Word for a short period (like 5min) and then start typing again I might miss 2 or 3 first letters on the first word, it feels like the CPU goes under a load spike there for a second.

@yaokong I tried bios just now too. Although the typing misses is much less than in Windows, but there are still misses.

I tried to type a to z for many times and there was one "n" missed.

I tried to type what you just typed (there were e,h,o missed for you in windows) THREE times, and I am sure one o was missed and one p were missed.

Maybe you can have more test, but at least for me, I am sure in BIOS there are cases that I was sure I did press the key but it did not show up. Though it is much less than in Windows.

Btw, I did not disable the USB selective suspend as mentioned in another thread. I will try to disable it and test in bios again and see whether it will be different.

disabling USB selective suspend doesn't help in Bios, there are still misses.

I am not sure how key presses in thinkpad PS/2 keyboard are known by the CPU, is it possible that some keyboard interrupts are missed by the CPU (probably due to some other devices registered interrupts with higher priority and interrupts the cpu with more often than expected frequency, so that it conflicts the keyboard interrupt)?

This somehow explains higher CPU load = higher misses, and there are often burst misses in 10 or 20 seconds and then no misses for several minutes.

@heartsg - you are absolutely right, I tested it again in UEFI and got 2 missed keystrokes. Back in Windows typing similar amount and I got almost 10. I am glad I have the choice of using it mostly docked with external devices or else I would be going mad using it for work.

I noticed a missing comma before "or else" in the sentence above, placed the cursor, typed only the comma and nothing happened. This is a irst, that even a single keystroke is missed by itself. I raised my arm, pushed the key and absolutely nothing happened. Both funny and annoying.

It looks like there is similar problem with Ideapad 700 15ISK:

And some users were already able to solve it by... cutting a cable which connects keyboard with motherboard...

If you read the page 36 of the ideapad problems, multiple people confirmed that

"I'm confirming that keyboard works fine after updating BIOS to E5CN60WW version".

So if it is a bios problem, we need to work hard to push Lenovo to come out with a new bios to fix this asap!

If you turn to page 40 you'll find a guy with thinkpad P73 also got key misses (probably similar to x1e and p1).

Is it possible to advertise this thread so that we can have more people to try to solve this?
