Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

2019-11-27, 17:44 PM

A Lenovo support specialist and a Lenovo emplyee has both posted on this topic so I'm assuming the problem is under investigation. Atleast they has to know for sure. I'm sure there are lots of more customers with this problem who has contacted the support but not posting here. There has been delays on the X1E2 deliveries and I think this what we got here is just a tip of iceberg as more people get their hands on the laptop and start harassing the support.

Owners who has posted on this topic seems to be located all around the world so I believe it's a bigger problem than just a small batch. I might be completely wrong though but this is how I think of it. Now it only depends how fast they are... $3k top of the line laptop which is defective and can't be used to what it is designed to, I would expect quite fast response and updates on the situation of the investigation but we'll see.. Atleast they need to fix the issue whatsoever because it is under warranty and it is broken. The device is not at the condition what we have paid for.

I was private messaged by a lenovo employee. Basically asking me to boot into safemode and try typing into something for a while to see if you get any key press misses. If anybody gets a message like that, please quickly respond so they can get this issue routed to the right people.

This seems like a *very* familiar problem - and was one of the reasons I returned my X1C6 last year.

Here is a post on the Lenovo forums (from last year) that describes what sounds like a similar issue, along with links to two Reddit posts where people were troubleshooting the issue - might be helpful.

@drfyzziks

----- Please ignore the result of this post (read the next instead), I misunderstood the numbers and made a wrong conclusion ----------

I've tested the keyboard according to https://github.com/ad8e/input-polling-test and confirm that x1e is 125hz frequency (8ms)

The guy on github says: "This represents a 2000Hz-report-rate keyboard with a 125Hz scan rate and a 23ms ordering problem.", I am still not sure where he got the number 2000 and 23ms. But yes, X1E has same problem of pressing asdf and comes out fdsa.

However, I tried my USB keyboard, I press asdf simultaneously, I always get "dfsa" too (this means the USB keyboard is a low scanning frequency keyboard). But I never experience key press misses on my USB keyboard.

So I think even there are ordering issues in X1E (as in almost all thinkpad keyboards), this still shouldn't affect the key press misses. They are not exactly the same issue?

Sorry I misunderstood the number. I tried the program in github on X1E, and I think if I press two keys together, I always get a delay of 0.07xx MILLIseconds (I had thought it is second).

This number is much smaller than what the github explanation says it should be from 0 to 8 to 16 to 32.

If I press two keys very fast (not simultaneously), I can see the number vary from 0.xxx Milliseconds to 70.xxx Milliseconds.

So I think x1e does not have the problem what the github explanation describes.

And as what I said, the key press miss must be something else that is different from the keyboard ordering issue.

I have the same problem (Danish keyboard). Not when sliding my finger over the keyboard, but when typing normally. At first i thought that I just had to adapt to the centered keyboard (coming from P50 with numpad).
My TrackPoint died on a firmware update and I got a new keyboard installed. The one mounted from fatory wasn't in stock, so Lenovo had to make a "part swap", and supplied me with a "substitute" with another productnumber. The problem also exists with the new keyboard. The problem is  not a "bad batch" of keyboards.
When changing keyboard they do not change the keyboard controller printboard, they move it over to the new keyboard.

Today Lenovo uploaded new Intel Graphics Drivers. I'll test them later to see if that's the problem.

Well, I can't recommend installing Intel Graphics drivers from 28th november 2019 ver. 26.20.100.7529.
After reboot I coulden't adjust brightness anymore. Tried uninstalling. Still didn't work. Had to restore Windows.
I'm very tired of Lenovo. Really. This is not a cheap machine and I've already had onsite 2 times. Keyboard change fixed the TrackPoint, but not my return button is broken. Lenovo came with a new keyboard, same problem with return button. Waiting for a new keyboard.
Now the Intel Drivers, Missing keystrokes. That's really really bad for the most expensive machine from Lenovo.

I would appreciate if Lenovo could say whether they have any X1E2 devices in working order. Eg, is this a hardware problem affecting some/all devices, or is this a firmware problem affecting all devices?

I am no longer using my laptop...it's collecting dust now...and I see no option other than to advice anyone I know looking at laptops to avoid Lenovo on the whole given the sluggish reply here.

Yes I agree. I don't quite get it why not to keep the community forum informed because I'm sure most of the customers when having a problem will google it and then finds out a community forum where nobody is giving an updates on the situation. This kind of forum is definitely more affordable way to answer people's support requests and questions rather than answering them all individually by phone or support tickets in a support center.
