Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

Don't expect this to be resolved anytime soon...

I was thinking and most big companies are sending their workers for home office due to Coronavirus outbreak. Obviously, Lenovo too.

China is partially stopped.

President Trump has just banned flights from Europe to USA, including cargo flights.

So, we going to wait a long time.

Premier support came out today and replaced the keyboard.  However, the problem persists.  He spoke with a Lenovo rep who confirmed it as a known issue with the model.  They are going to perform a second keyboard replacement tomorrow, after which I may know more.

As far as I know, I read from some reddit user that his problem was solved after the second attempt of keyboard replacement. Maybe the problem could be related with the keyboard SKU but I not sure.

Anyway there are users who are not experiencing any issues. They said that keyboard was working fine since day 0 without giving them any missing keystrokes. I think someone posted here that his keyboard is working fine.

It is a shame because this is a great machine but issue is destroying one of the best things of this brand: the keyboard quality.

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

After having a myriad of other problems and sending the machine back, I was just happy that I got a working X1E2. Missing keystrokes were the least of my issues.

But after some time, this whole thing is becoming more and more annoying. I don't type that much but what I type counts (code and sci papers). It's really embarrassing to see your writing showing up with mistakes spell checker won't pick up:

  • hey instead of they
  • ho instead of who
  • sh*t instead of shift

These are just some of the examples I actually caught before publishing. With code it's easier because it won't compile but the papers are really where the embarrassment hits hard. Some of the mistakes I realized only after the fact. Reading this list you might be inclined to laugh, but if you think about it, these kind of things have impact on someone's re**bleep**tion.

I have the keyboard with Atmos logo and the latest 1.29 BIOS. I occasionally keep hearing BIOS beeps. On some days there is a bunch of characters/strokes being held up in the queue, suddenly being released all at one moment.

EDIT: Interesting, forum is censoring the part of the word r e p u t a t i o n.

You should add a footnote to your papers, ie. "Typed with famous X1 Extreme Gen2 Keyboard".

So, the world would understand then.

Keyboard was replaced again today.  The new one is much, much, much better.  The technician said the next step should it appear again would be to replace the system.  My guess is Lenovo had a supplier providing faulty units which would explain why some never experience this problem.

@joc123

How recently did you purchase/receive your x1e2? I'm curious if someone who has bought an x1 extreme recently has this issue. I'm assuming that they had a supplier that provided faulty keyboards and they did no realize until forums like these started happening. So anyone who buys it now will get a normal thinkpad keyboard. And instead of doing a mass recall they are going to try mitigate it using software. That is probably why @louwill's keyboard is much better after the second replacement. The first replacement support replaced the keyboard with an old one that is faulty.

Anyways, I have a new x1e2 coming by the end of the week (ordered March 1). If anyone is curious I will report back here. I also know another user on reddit who recently purchased an x1e2 that will be coming next week, they said they will test it and report back to me.

It arrived on Tuesday, ordered the week before. A preconfigured system, produced in December 2019.

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

I am no longer sure of myself. My X1 does not have the problem where keypresses on the edge don't register or where running my finger along the top row produces something other than qwertyuiop. However it may have the missed keystrokes problem. I tried to induce this by running the XTU stress test in the background, on battery with selective suspend, and pressing h / Return in quick succession, using my hand like a see saw. I think this induces it sometimes, but you have to be very fast, so it's hard to say whether it's the machine or my hand coordination.
