Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

2020-07-24, 10:32 AM

I have just received my X1 gen2 from service. The power controller died, so the technitian had to replace the entire motherboard. I have also asked to replace the keyboard. So now I have almost a brand new laptop with new case, keyboard and old 1.27 bios. I want to share my observations and thoughts.

The keyboard feels completely different. The keys are firmer and have a crisp pressure point. Pressing the edges of the keys is also recognized correctly. Now the overall typing experience is much closer to a normal thinkpad keyboard. Unfortunately I dont't know the partnumber of the new keyboard. All I can say is that it has a dolby atmos logo in the bottom left corner, while the old one doesn't have it.

However, despite the improved keyboard feling and better typing experience, missing keystrokes are still here on 1.27 bios. So now I'm waiting the 1.30 bios file from joloriquelme to try.

With that said, I believe that the keyboard issue has two independent parts. The first one is poor parts quality. It can not be fixed with the firmware update, but it also does not cause the missing keystrokes itself. The second one is the faulty firmware. Because even on a brand new keyboard that types ok I still have missing keystrokes.

So I advice everyone to fire a service report, get a new keyboard, and then find the right bios version, which has no or at least less missing keystrokes.

Thanks for sharing, most complete, 'two factors' analysis, I endorse as the best to apply. So strange the 'dolby atmos' label was not on the original case, now it's there, since it's an original feature of x1e2.

Now, we realized that a new keyboard comes together with his new case, the 'dolby atmos' label could be the flag to identify a bad vs good keyboard hardware?

What do you think about it?

I've got the dolby atmos label, my feeling on the keyboard hw is very good, but despite that I'm very rarely missing a keystroke, with bios 1.31.

My previous keyboard hasn't the Dolby Atmos logo.

The new one contains the Dolby Atmos logo and works perfect. The difference is day and night.

Regards.

vittoxtre,

Unfortunately I dont think that dolby logo is the correct flag to identify the "good" keyboard. I've seen first posts from users with dolby logo keyboard since winter, and they also suffered from poor keyboard experience. My laptop was produced in late summer or early fall, that is why the keyboard has no logo.

If you look at the "Parts"section of the lenovo support site, you will see, that there are at least two different partnumbers for the keyboard unit, both with dolby logo. Please see the photos attached.

So, until there is no information whether these two partnumbers perform identically, and which one is installed on the particular notebook, it is problematic to draw any conclusions.

mine was produced dec 2019, it has the atmos logo. So the logo was not dismissed after summer or early fall.

well,  I've found 72 items in c-cover with keyboard. Some are defined as 'equivalent'.

Anyway it should be a lottery also when replacing.

Seems too many part numbers to me...for the ones I randomly checked out, they all have the atmos logo, assuming pictures are not copied.

With this testimony I think we can now be sure it's a hardware/software mixed problem.

Definitely !

It also offer a tentative explanation of why you could have bios issues on a keyboard (seriously unexpected in 2020).

If that bios release has to be compliant with all of the 72 keyboard part numbers, then ...Houston we have a problem...

So may be there is not a final solution of a bios release that could fit each/all of our hardware....it's not a 'one fit all' solution.

Hi,

I always said that this is a Hardware AND Software problem, separately.

The Hardware aspect of the problem is a bad quality keyboard not recognizing keystrokes on the keys corners. So, most people who type fast and softly will have issues.

It is resolved replacing a keyboard with a new one with better quality. The thing is, we don't know what PN it is or how we can obtain it for sure under warranty.

The "Software part" of the problem problem is in fact an issue with the EC (Embedded controller) included in BIOS. It has some electrostatic issues affecting ALL keyboards (good ones and bad ones) and was resolved in ECFW version 1.22, after months and months of wait.

This specific version of this ECFW is present in:

  • BIOS 1.30 (pulled, nobody knows why)
  • BIOS 1.29-1.22 (released after the BIOS 1.30 was pulled - so that's why it is called 1.29-1.22)

But, with ECFW 1.23 included with BIOS 1.31, the problem went back again. Something happened that the issue was reintroduced in minor way in EFCW 1.23.

Andy sent me days ago internally a mix with BIOS 1.31 plus ECFW 1.22 (1.31-1.22), that I haven't try yet. But I will today. I don't have permission to share it with you.
