you're right. another user jorilq said to buy a "fruit" instead which i think he meant apple. his post was deleted. I'd also advise against lenovo. they way they've handled this issue is a joke. here i am typing this message with constants lags. super annoying. i think i may have to go the mac route this year.

Nope.

It's a joke a computer manufacturing company can't launch a product that works properly to start, and then in the instance it doesn't, they can't figure out how to properly fix it.

I bought this for the discrete graphics to do 3D modeling for aligning teeth and making aligners.  I was working on cases today, and it would studder and lag and the fans were constantly running even with me just moving the model around on the screen.  Then at another point, the fans would spin down and things would start working again.  I don't get it...somewhere in this thing Lenovo bottlenecked the hell out of it or has some microcode messed up, and that's not to mention the keyboard issue that seems to still be cropping up for some!!!

IBM made stout Thinkpads.  Lenovo, after buying the brand, kept it up decently in the beginning.  My X201t lasted me 10 years before I bought this one (and it still works!), but I think in recent years the quality must have gone down.  Just browse this forum.  They pump out more models than they know how to troubleshoot.  And the response to reported problems (like this thread) is pathetic.

Looking back at my experience, I would have never bought it.  If they were honest about the battery life with a 4K screen, I definitely would not have bought it.  I did get it considerably discounted for Black Friday last year, but between the keyboard issues, the random studdering, and the absolutely terrible battery life with a 4k screen, not a chance.

Thanks for the honest feedback guys.  Saved me from buying a lemon (that's a fruit :)    Very concerning that Lenovo is deleting posts providing honest feedback from owners.   Please stop that Lenovo - if you sell a poor quality product people are entitled to publicly share their experiences.

My Lenovo E520 has been the best laptop I've ever owned - it hasn't missed a beat in 9 years.  Keyboard is still the best one I type on.   Would love to stick with Lenovo but I need a rock solid laptop and these seem hard to come by these days.  Hopefully the new Gen3 will solve all these issues...

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

Back into this topic:

I tried a couple of test updates provided internally by Lenovo, based on BIOS 1.31 and ECFW 1.23.

None of them fixes the issue, and I still experienced multiple problems while tipying too fast: troubles with the spacebar like "are yo uthere?". "this notebooki s wrong", and, of course "problms with the keystrokes missng".

Downgraded this time to official BIOS 1.29-1.22 (remember that 1.30 was pulled). Everything works okay again, even the thermals.

So, I'll stay with 1.29-1.22 for the time being. I don't expect Lenovo to fix this issue again, specially now that there is a new Gen3 version of this notebook.

I will sell it once I finish payments and buy a.... well, you know what. ;)

@joloriquelme, so, why downgrade to 1.29 when you have a copy of 1.30 (even though Lenovo removed it)? Is there an issue staying with 1.30?

I didn't notice any issue with 1.30 too. Both worked fine for me. But, since 1.29-1.22 wasn't pulled, I choose to stay with that. At this time we still don't know why Lenovo pulled 1.30. I recommend, if you don't have any issues with 1.30, stay with that version.

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

I just came here again, after many days, to insist that:

  • With 1.29-1.22 BIOS/EC, I am NOT experiencing any issues at all with the keyboard, or even with thermals. Keys are responsive, fans are working fine, and notebook temps are good.
  • This BIOS/EC (1.29-1.22), is by far, the best for this Notebook IMO. It is even better than the pulled 1.30 (with 1.22 ECFW) that I was using before.

All of this confirms that the 'keystrokes missing' issue was fixed in BIOS 1.29-1.22, but later re-introduced in BIOS 1.31 (with ECFW 1.23). Unfortunately, the devs did something and all problems that were fixed in ECFW 1.22 are back with ECFW 1.23).

@ joloriquelme ,

It would be very interesting to compare 1.29-1.22 BIOS/EC with 1.30 firmware. In my case on 1.30 BIOS, the overall keyboard experience is OK, although I constantly have several missing keystrokes per hour.
