Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

Just in case some of you did not pay attention to, lenovo has pulled off the 1.31 bios.

It is now providing bios 1.29-1.22 only on its official page, and bios 1.31 is now nowhere to be found.

That's very good and bad news at the same time.

Good news because Lenovo finally took notice that BIOS 1.31 has serious problems (including missing keystrokes issue) and BIOS 1.29-1.22 (embedded controller 1.22) is the best for this model so far, like I was mentioning since weeks ago.

Bad news because it took more than 3 months to the brand to realize that this was actually true.

This is one of the most expensive computers on the market. A year has passed since this model was launched, and we are still dealing with issues and problems. Worst part: Lenovo tech support doesn't seems to improve on quicky give responses and information, and we are constantly seeing pulled drivers and BIOS updates without a single notice.

We are Betatesters people.

Lenovo has a serious driver QC problem, like Asus. Unfortunately, I am not in position to recommend this brand anymore, despite the ThinkPad quality history, but I hope our issues will be fixed one day for this model in particular, so my very last Windows computer will work fine.

New BIOS 1.34 keeps ECFW 1.22, so it should work okay...

But, it shows this warning in the changelog:

- Updated Network Boot Device and Boot conditions.

(Note) If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.34 or higher, it is no longer able to roll back to the version before 1.34 for boot problem prevention.

Because of this, I am not updating unless I am having some problem mentioned in the changelog as "fixable". I am not taking the risk of broke the keyboard again. I am not having any problem right now on 1.29-1.22.

It is strange that they would prevent rollback.  I don't like that at all.

As an update for users, I was running on 1.30 for a long time with my fan spinning up a lot and the computer slowing down.  I jumped from 1.28 to 1.30 when they released 1.30, so never used the 1.29 with 1.22 EC.  My keyboard was much improved on 1.30, which is why I didn't want to change anything.

However, the other day, I rolled back to 1.29 with 1.22 EC because of the fan and lag issues.  I have to say that the keyboard works really great (maybe even better than 1.30) and the computer has been silent.  I rarely hear the fans and my 3D modeling software for orthodontics works MUCH better and smoother.

So without having used the most recently released one (1.34), I'd say to stick with 1.29 with 1.22EC for the best experience.  I'll wait to hear other experience with 1.34, but the fact that you can't roll back is a huge NO to me.  Why would they do that???

Edit: it actually sounds like the UEFI BIOS update 1.34 alters boot information from that snippet Joloquierme posted.  Makes me wonder if they changed out the SSDs are handled, because I remember reading a number of users on here having issues when more than one SSD was used in their computer.

I am not upgrading either.

I have rolled back to 1.29 from 1.30 because of constant fan noise. I have also undervolted the system and repasted the processor which made system temperature go from constant 70 degrees to constant 50-51 degrees. No fans at all now.

So - if you want a good DIY machine for $2k then X1Egen2 is a good choice for you. Some software hacking here and hardware tweaking there and it finally is getting in shape.

I don't know if my message got deleted or what but here it is again: I have BIOS 1.31 on my laptop and trying to install 1.34 will bring up a dialog box saying that "BIOS image file is older than BIOS ROM". At this point I will stop the installation. Btw, Vantage is not offering this as an automatic update, so I'd be careful before proceeding with manual update.

Also, I have two SSDs in my laptop so if this version of BIOS is screwing that up, it's a big oof from me and a hard pass.

I had the same message. I backed out of the update, triple-checked everything, and then ran the update. The update was fine.

I have not used my system much yet since the update.

The warning about the 'downgrade' could be because the BIOS 1.34 downgrades the Embedded Controller (EC) included in the BIOS, from 1.23 to 1.22.

That is because all problems with thermals and keystrokes reported with EC 1.23.

EC 1.22 is the same included in BIOS 1.30 and 1.29-1.22, both with no problems at least with the keyboard.

Please don't forget to share experiences and feedback for 1.34.

Does anyone know the file name for 1.29 bios? I would try to find it from their site now as they replaced it with the 1.34. At least they could let the user decide which bios he wants to use rather than forcing to be a guinea pig and test their broken updates. I definitely won't update to 1.34.

edit. Also if someone still has the 1.29 bios install file I would be grateful to receive it and downgrade.
