Re:X1 Extreme Gen 3 Blinking Screen Issue!!!!

2021-05-19, 15:59 PM

Dear All,

I have the same issue as it is shown in current video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuGhi5xhzgc

Blinking of the screen has not disappeared even after bios, drivers updates (using system update and lenovo vantage).

Technical service even changed motherboard, but the issue has not disappeared.

2 months already passed, but no any issue was found. It is very disappointing that 3000 Eur laptop has such unresolved problems.

I have asked seller to change laptop to new one, but technical service ask more time to find the issue. :(

I have lenovo X230 model and it still works with no issue for 8 years.

Waiting for any help from LENOVO. I do not want to lose trust in company products.

Sincerely,

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 3 Blinking Screen Issue!!!!

we have 2 p1s in our house.  a newer p1 gen 3 with a different looking and maybe? heavier power brick.  still 135w 20v/6.75A  tried it on the p1 gen2 that has screen flicker and it went away.    so ordering a newer brick.

i suspected it was the power because i could reproduce the issue by enabling/disabling  in Lenovo advantage app > power > airplane mode (not like wifi airplane) but actually a way to limit how much power you consume when on a plane.  eg maybe 80w over usb c for example on a macbook.

anyway if i enable that i have no issues with screen flicker when plugged in.  with that off the screen flickers on/off until finally the lenovo software offers to enable airplane mode.

i also disabled the "panel refresh" options in Intel Graphics Command  under devices/hardware > power > for both battery and plugged with max power set on plugged.

fwiw/ymmv and all that.

here is the brick model number that the p1 gen 2  came with:

ADL135SCC3A  it's the "slim" model that is flatter and more square than a regular brick

here is the one that worked for me (it might be an older model?):

ADL135NLC2A looks more like a rectangular brick

again who knows but it worked for me.  ordering a non-slim brick.

Our X1 Extreme Gen 3 (or our X1 Extreme Gen 1 for that matter) never had the "blinking screen" issue. No problems at all.

For what it's worth, we use:

1) Full size "brick" AC power adapter 135W, Model No. ADL135NDC3A

    (same report as buddy12lbcat)

2) We can confirm that this issue does not exist on our config:

  • i7 10750H
  • FHD (1920x1080) IPS, 500 nits (lower power consumption for longer battery life)
  • 4G WWAN

~iNTEL Graphics Command Center:  "Panel Self-Refresh" set to: DISABLED

~Do not know about the setting for "Extend Battery Life for Gaming", could no find it

Daily Driver: X1 Extreme Gen 3 (X1E-3) | WWAN (mobile broadband)
X1E-3, X1E-1, X1C-9, X1C-4, X1C-3, X230

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 3 Blinking Screen Issue!!!!

Thank you for posting this information. Ever since breaking my X1 Extreme Gen 3 out of the box, it's been nothing but one problem after another, and the most irritating has been the flickering screen. My system came w/ battery model #ADL135SDC2A. Did yours come w/ model #ADL135NDC3A, or is this something you'd purchased at a later date? I realize that you've never experienced the blinking screen issue, but given the myriad problems I've experienced in a few short months, I thought that maybe you'd purchased this battery to troubleshoot something else entirely. I was able to find your battery, as well as the one buddy12lbcat is using, on ebay, each for under $20. Since you're actually using the same system as I am, I'm leaning toward purchasing the same battery you're running, since we know that it works in your system. Again, thanks very much for posting your experience w/ this!

That full size "brick" 135W AC power adapter, Model No. ADL135NDC3A manufacturing date was "2019/02" was ordered separately in our region.

(It was ordered from Lenovo regional website Feb 2019, along with X1 Extreme Gen 1).

Best of luck!

Both our X1 Extreme Gen 3 (and X1 Extreme Gen 1for that matter) came with the "slim profile" 135W AC power adapter that you can only obtain by ordering the X1E3 or X1E1 itself, as show in the first photo below:

(Think almost all if not all folks ordering i7/i5 CPU gets this "slim profile" 135W AC power adapter that you can only obtain by ordering the X1E3 or X1E1 ).

I see. Thanks very much! I'm going to give it a shot, and I'll report back to this forum to let everyone know if it resolves the issue.

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 3 Blinking Screen Issue!!!!

So, after a lot of thought, I decided against purchasing the power adapter.  Instead, I went into the BIOS, and I disabled the Intel GPU, since I have the NVIDIA GPU installed, as well.  I've been running this for roughly two months w/out issue, so this problem is limited to the Intel GPU.  I still can't say for certain what the cause of the problem is, but this "fix" has worked for time being.  The reason that I decided against purchasing the power adapter was that since this system is still under warranty, I figured that if it was a power-related issue, I'd rather have the laptop replaced.
