X1 Extreme Gen 3 - HDR on external display

2021-01-11, 18:35 PM

Hi there,

Finally!!! I got it!!! Ordered on Septemberཐ, arrived o Januaryད 8th!! My all new ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 (20TK).

Using it with my all-new docking station “ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock/Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 - Type 40AN” and 2 external monitors connected via DisplayPorts

  1. LG 27UL850-W  - with HDR
  2. Dell U2718Q      - no HDR

While the Dell one makes no troubles, whenever I am setting “HDR on” in “Windows HD Color settings” for LG monitor the displayed picture is “overcolored”, fonts are barely readable, and usage of this screen becoming a nightmare. Once the HDR for LG monitor is OFF, everything comes back to “normal”. The Lenovo’s built-in OLED monitor is also equipped in HDR and it works perfectly.

Anyone, any idea on what is to be set to enable good HDR in the LG?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hi alternet,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I suggest for you to try just one external display using the LG 27UL850-W, with HDR on. Set aside the Dell U2718Q for the meantime.

If it will not work, chances are the issue might be on LG 27UL850-W (could require firmware update from the manufacturer).

Let me know what happens next.

Regards

Hi @Lorenzo_Lenovo

Here are my tests results:

X1E – with 2 external monitors (one HDR) – the HDR display is very bad

X1E – with one external HDR monitor – the HDR display is just bad.

X1Yoga (gen 2) – with this external HDR monitor gives beautiful picture.

I do not think this is the monitor problem :|

Hello alternet,

Greetings

Sorry for the late response.

I suggest that you update the BIOS, docking station's firmware and display drivers, thru the support site.
Then try the 2 external monitors

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo

X1 Extreme Gen 3 - HDR on external display

"Use HDR" is working for you with the internal OLED? For me it is really bad. The colours are way undersaturated and all menus in Windows are extremely laggy.

Yes. The HDR is superb on internal OLED display.

The colours are way undersaturated and all menus in Windows are extremely laggy.

This is the result I have on the external display.

I have been battling poor HDR issue on the Extreme Gen 2 and now the Extreme Gen 3... It seems unusable when hybrid graphics is selected. In order to get perfect HDR performance and no lag within the system you must change it to discreet graphics in the BIOS. This is the only solution that has worked for me. There is something weird going on with Lenovo's intel graphics drivers not playing nice.
