X1 Extreme Gen2 - Battery life is...ridicolous? Please share yours

2019-12-01, 13:17 PM

I have a brand new X1 Extreme - Gen 2.  Here are my specs:

  • Model 20QVCTO1WWITIT2
  • BIOS N2OET40W 1.27
  • I9-9880H
  • 32G RAM
  • OLED Touchscreen (500nits?)

I unplug it and look at Windows' estimate on battery life: it ranges from 3 to 4 hours.

I use it to browse / do some basic Office and...it goes down to 2 hours.
This battery life is ridicolously low for a +3.000€ laptop. :smileyfrustrated:

And yes, I already set brightness to the minimum...

Can you please share your battery life / specs (cpu/screen type)?

Let's compare our stats and try to understand what is going here....

Actually, 3 hours is very high for a Core i9 with a OLED 4K display.

I brought this Notebook knowing that battery life would be low. I had another 4K Laptop and the story was the same. You can't expect too much when  you need a lot of power to display all those pixels.

Can you charge the battery to 100%, disable dGPU, tune the brigness 2-3 level down from the max, do some basic office productivity and web browsing and report back the battery life?

I can get about 5-6 hours with 50% brightness, OLED and i7-9750H in mixed use. Battery life is the least of a problem compared to all of these software bugs as the devs are trying hard to cripple these devices to useless. Would be nice if we could do a patreon and buy a actual test unit for the devs so they could test updates before releasing. When I got this device the TrackPoint firmware update did brick the TrackPoint so it did not work at all and the Intel graphic driver updates brick the brightness to 100% without a possibility to adjust it.

Hmmm... I'd agree to 3H use on a i9, OLED X1E if I am at least surfing the web or doing something on the computer. I have a fresh out of the box X1E configured with i9 and OLED + 32GB RAM and so on that has expected battery life shown on the taskbar less than 2H (~ 1H 40M) even when I am doing anything on the computer, with medium/low light setting on my screen. From time to time (every 5-10 minutes), the fan comes on... and goes off. Fan comes on very easily when I am downloading some files from the web and trying to browse the web on Chrome. I've also noted same issues of screen lag when connecting to external monitor (and initially were not able to control the dimming function) after the system and windows updates. So, this new laptop is sitting on my desk as I currently don't have a lot of time to troubleshoot with the Lenovo service.

I know i9 and OLED combination would kill the battery life. But I was at least hoping minimum 3H use consistently. When this is less than 2H, something is definitely wrong for this type of flagship laptop computer.

This X1 Gen2 is crap. Lenovo just made a poor product. My last buy from Lenovo. awful support and a horrible experience for such a highly-priced product. Battery, display, keystrokes, everything is just not working as it should. So disappointed!!!

I have the i9 with 4K OLED display and 32 GB RAM. On battery with full brightness it lasts about 3 hours, when I put the slider to the left. (whatever that means)

Please be sure to manually update your nvidia drivers. I have the gen2 with i7 9750H, 500 nit FHD, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd version and only got about 4 hours of battery life. After I updated my nvidia driver to nvidia's latest it doubled!

I get about 9 hours of netflix playback with high brightness now.
