Re: X1 Extreme Gen2 - Battery life is...ridicolous? Please share yours

@hoetz

May I ask which version of driver you installed? Game ready driver or Studio driver?

Btw, I reinstalled Windows 10 and removed all Lenovo default software. When I open device mananger and see driver information, it shows the driver version is 26.21.14.3213, which is completely different from the Nvidia official driver version. I am not too sure the difference between the Windows 10 driver and the official driver.

So what are the resuts for X1 2nd gen owners with a FHD 500 Nits,do they all have improved battery life after updating the drivers with the ones from nVidia.

Can I expect problems if I install the nvidia drivers instead of the ones Lenovo supplied, does Lenovo makes any change to those drivers.

Should the Lenovo drivers be uninstalled prior to installing the nVidia drivers?

There seemed to be a bug where the graphics board consumed energy while being idle, is this bug solved with the latest drivers?

I upgraded to lastest Game Ready version downloaded in official site.

The X1E is 4K display and I do not feel significant increase in battery life (I don't use battery mode often anyway).

I rebooted immediately after upgrade, and read the life time in battery mode. It's about 1h50mins for 45% battery. This is roughly equivalent to 4h for 100% battery power, so even I don't use battery mode that much, the battery life is not improved significantly (like 10 hours).

Sorry since my laptop is a complete reinstallation of Windows 10, I lose some power tuning capabilities.

Just now I fine tuned power options, and put max processor in battery mode to 80% instead of 100%, and put Intel graphics card as well as wireless adapter to maximize power life instead of maximize performance, and I also adjust the screen brightness to almost lowest (just 1 or 2 levels higher than the lowest).

Then I notice the remaining battery life changed to 1h40mins for 30%, this is roughly equivalent to 6h for 100%, which is much better.

But frankly I am not sure how much the latest driver helps because I never fine tuned these battery settings because I seldom use battery mode.

By just doing some minimum text editing tasks, the battery life now is 1h30mins for 22%, this is equivalent to 6.8h for 100% power.

I believe this is good enough for a 4k display laptop.

I am satisfied with the power life time. The only problem now is that it misses keystrokes stated in another post.

i7-9750H, 4K non-oled display, 64G RAM

Same problem:  2-3 hour battery life out of the box.

Using Ubuntu with the Nvidia prime drivers lets me turn off power to the nvidia card.  This extends battery life to 4-5 hours on lowest brightness.

I got the I7 instead I9 because I thought it would extend battery life.  My thinking was that I can endure extended crunch time in exchange for non-crunch battery life.  It seems I lost out on both counts.

Charging from a powerbank through thunderbolt yields a charge of 50% of the powerbank's rating.  i.e.: 80W powerbank provides 40W of X1EG2 battery power.  The powerbanks are as heavy as the laptop itself.

The X1EG2  laptop is not so thin and light if one must carry a powerbank(s) and a power supply to get through a work day.

Here is a SUGGESTION lenovo:  Make a replacement bottom cover with space for 160W battery, and provide the battery as well.

Mine (i7, uhd, 32gb ram, 97wh battery) is ridiculous I use programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, InDesign, and XD daily. With screen birghtness all the way down to its pathetically dim level, I can get no more than 3hrs on battery life. That's with the dedicated graphics disabled and only running 1 program at a time.  Even with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility undervolting by -.150v, I have never gotten more than 3hrs.

I also noticed my graphics drivers crash all the time with external monitors (docking station or via usb c). The laptop gets very loud and hot, then the driver fails. A quick reboot resolves the error but it's super annoying. Or I have to disable one of the graphics drivers and then remember to renable when I am done with graphic intense work. It's annoying and a step no user should have to take.

As a comparison, my Dell XPS 9560 (fhd, i7, 32gb ram, 97wh battery) undervolted gets over 10hrs of battery under heavy use with only dedicated graphics (disabling Intel graphics). And this screen at it's lowest brightness is brighter than my lenovo at half brightness!

FWIW there's a new BIOS update and the readme shows some rather interesting stuff:

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2our09w.txt

- Improved processor performance on Windows environment.

- Improved skin temperature on AC mode. [Problem fixes]

- Improved key code generation logic to avoid keystroke missing issue.

Hi,

for me the geforce driver installation worked too, after restart. Not immediately, but for some reason a day later.

I have the i7, 1GB ssd, fhd x1 extreme gen 2 and after the original 4h+ battery life, i had on full brightness around two hours after 1 year of usage.

manually installing the driver gives me 4h 50min on full brightness, full charge. this is not awesome, but nothing to complain about.

though i cannot understand how people can use the display on 50% brightness. for me its like double sunglasses^^

i use firefox for youtube, excel, word, adobe in parallel usually
