Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

I'll give it a go when I get home.

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

So I figured out a big part of my problem.  You were on the right path with battery management.  I was on max performance.  So I dropped it to better performance and saw a 18c drop.  So now I'm at 80-82c during a 10 minute stress test in xtu.  This is with -0.150v core offset.  Its the same at -0.130v.  However, I still get thermal throttling from the cpu.  Ran a GPU stress test with no issues and that runs nice and cool of 70c.

Any recommendations on stopping the throttling on the cpu, or at least reducing the frequency?

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

put it on max power savings which will throttle the clocks faster to power savings

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

Will I see performance drop by doing that?

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

So o did a 4 hour stress test through XTU and through Prime95.  Both passed.  I dont know how to read Prime95 numbers.  See the figures on XTU.  Only issue is the CPU still throttles.  Temperatures stay at about 80-82c.  I will remove the graphite pads and use MX-4 and retest.

What else can I do to reduce CPU throttling, if I can at all.  20181110_204849.jpg

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

try optimal defaults in the BIOS as a baseline

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

I gave that a go and I'm in the same boat.  I've set everything back to factory settings and re-ran the xtu test.  Temperatures hover in the low 80's, still throttling.

I ran Cinebench benchmark and my scores are very low in comparison to when I first ran it when I got the laptop.  Otherwise the system runs great.

I dont know if I'm overthinking this.  I'm going to repaste it today and re-check it.  If all else fails, I'll get a hold of Lenovo support and see what they say.

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

Great news!  After removing the graphite pads and applying the MX-4 thermal compound, the X1 is running cooler than a cucumber.  This is with -0.125v.  While stress testing, the laptop would hover around 65-70c at 99-100% CPU utilization.  So I'm really happy with the results.  My benchmarks also sky rocketed too!

On the flip side, I am getting Power Limit Throttling.  Even with this happening, my clocks are running at 3200-3800mhz while under stress.  Any thoughts on stopping the PLT?

Thanks for all you help and input!

Re: X1 Extreme - Heat Issue

The X1 is not designed to be pushed hard like a desktop. The CPU power limit is there for a reason.

If you need a perforamnce machine, go build a desktop and get an i7-9900 CPU etc
