X1 Extreme "(A7) Me Fw Downgrade Request MeSpiLock Failed"

2019-05-17, 17:52 PM

I have a new (2 weeks) ThinkPad X1 Extreme.  After a recent Windows update, I get this error mesage "(A7) Me Fw Downgrade Request MeSpiLock Failed" when the computer boots, before the Windows logo appears.  It then takes about 1 minute and 40 seconds to boot!

I have called support but found no help.  I have downloaded FWUpdate and tried that but no success.  When I look at the BIOS, the data next to "ME Firmware Version" is blank.

This problem is mentioned in this forum and elsewhere but I cannot find a solution that works on my machine.  I am within the 30 day return window and I think I will have to return it if I can't find a fix

Hi HighCapper,

Welcome to the community forums.

Try downloading the Intel Management Engine 12.0 Software from our website here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme/downloads

(Enter serial number, drivers and downloads, select chipset under components). Let us know if this works.

Thanks!

Yes, I downloaded Intel Management Engine 12.0 Software ran it, and ran FWUpdate but I still get that message and booting takes almost 2 minutes.

Here is a pic of my BIOS setup screen.  Note how ME Firmware version is blank.  Could someone please confirm that their BIOS has a non-blank ME Firmware version?

There was a solution to this problem posted here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-X1-Yoga-1st-Gen-BIOS-Problem/m-p/4324447#M95337 for a different computer.

The solution was to run FWUpdLcl64.exe -F ME_11.8_Corporate_C0_LP_Production.BIN -OEMID 4C656E6F-766F-0000-0000-000000000000 -generic -allowsv -y

I would like to try this solution but when I try it I get Error 37: Invalid command line options.  I suspect it is the text after OEMID has to be specific for each model, but I don't know where to get that info for my computer, and I'm just guessing anyway

I have the same issue.  Just happened after it did a Vantage update.

Already tried reflashing to older bios and and reflashing back to latest bios

"Already tried reflashing to older bios and and reflashing back to latest bios"  - with no success, I presume?

When you look at the main BIOS Setup Screen - is it just a blank beside ME Firnware version?

NOTES

If you flash Intel ME v12.0.22.1310 and face an issue such as slow boot,
restarting 3 times or disabled Intel ME, please follow the steps below.

  1. Plug in AC power.
  2. Reboot the system to make sure starting from a freshly-booted state
  3. Save this file to your PC:
  https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/metroapps/FixP52P72MEFW/
  RecoverDisabledPlatform.zip
  4. Unzip the file to some folder on your PC.
  5. From the unzipped folder, right-click on SleepResumeUpdateFW_Reset.cmd and
     choose Run as Administrator.
  6. If you see a screen like "Windows protected your PC", you may need to click
on More info and and then click on Run anyway.
  7. If you see a screen like "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to
     your device", click on Yes.
  8. The system will go to sleep for 30 seconds, and then wake up automatically.
Please do not try to wake it up manually. Just wait.
  9. After the system wakes up, you should see the firmware flashing to the new
version, it may take a couple minutes, please don't interrupt it.
 10. The system will reboot automatically, after this, the problem should be
     gone.
 11. To confirm the new firmware updated successfully, reboot and press F1 to
enter BIOS Setup, then look for "ME Firmware Version" 12.0.24.1314.

I guess this worked for you?  Unfortunately, it did not work for me.  I still get the same error message and the ME Firmware version is still blank.

**bleep**

Everything appears to be working but at number 9. It asks "are you sure you want to perform a Firmware downgrade?" I say yes, and it appears to work except it does not take a couple minutes and does not automatically reboot.

Then everything is exactly the same as it was before. :(
