X1 Extreme with Samsung 970 Evo Plus

2019-08-19, 18:03 PM

Hello,

Has anyone had luck using the new Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSDs with the X1 extreme?  (Specifically the 2TB version.)

I tried the 2TB version and got a: "2104:  Detection error on SSD2  M.2" error.

It didn't  matter which slot was used or whether another SSD was present or not.  I upgraded to BIOS 1.23 and upgraded all of the firmware I could.  Still, no luck.

Does the 1TB version work?

I'm usingSamsung 970 Evo Plus for 1Tb.

Works fine.

I've got no errors or issues with installing, formatting and using it.

I'am also using a 970 Evo Plus 1TB SSD in my X1E, Gen1, no problems at all. Do you have another machine with a m.2 slot available to test if the SSD is faulty? 2TB should work fine according this thread

I don't have another machine with M.2 slots, but I did try both slots in the X1E and the error message from the BIOS followed the SSD.

Thanks, it's good to know the EVO Plus cards should work. Perhaps I just received a faulty one.

We would appreciate your update sharing on your 2 GB SSD experience on your X1 Extreme gen 1 !

We are also thinking of doing exactly what you have done:

ie: Add 2 GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus to our own X1 Extreme gen 1.

Daily Driver: X1 Extreme Gen 1 (X1E-1)
X1E-1, X1C-4, X1C-3, X250, X230, T410
Retired Thinkpads: T42, 560 (circa 1996)
Also: IBM Thinkpad era computer bag !

There was a guy who claimed he had successfully installed 2 TB Samsung 960 Pro SSD into X1 Extreme Gen 1.

I had to send the SSD back to the vendor already to be within the allowed time for returning the device.  I have another 2TB SSD on order, but not the EVO Plus.  I'll report if it works.

It's hard to know how a given device identifies to the system, so I myself wouldn't try to extrapolate the results of the 970 EVO to the 970 EVO Plus.

Thanks everyone for their feedback.

I just added a 2TB WD SN750 SSD and it just worked, no problem.

I now have 3TB in my system, the Lenovo/Samsung 1TB SSD plus the 2TB SN750.

I don't know why the 2TB 970 EVO Plus didn't work.  Possibly the system didn't like the controller or I simply had a defective card.  A system limit on storage capacity obviously isn't an issue with 3 TB.

This helped me too

Re: X1 Extreme with Samsung 970 Evo Plus

2019-10-10, 0:56 AM

I have a new X1 Extreme Gen 2 purchased with 500 GB Samsung SSD.  I am trying to add a 970 EVO Plus (2TB) in the second slot and on startup continue getting the message "2102: Detection Error on Storage Device1 (M.2),   Press F1 to continue"  Pressing F1 does nothing and hitting escape takes me in to a successful startup of the system from the 500 GB.  This always happens with the second drive in the system, but in its unrecognized state.

I went thru this with Samsung and they had me swapping drives in slots and had the same thing occur, only the error referred to Device0.  Their agent presumed the drive was defective and it has been replaced.  I am still getting the same problem.  In continued discussion with Samsung (another agent) about the replaced second drive, I was told to talk with Lenovo because it was likely a motherboard / boot manager issue.  I spoke with Lenovo via chat and was told that it was a Samsung problem.  Read a number of the posts and most appeared to be the replacement of the original SSD with a new one, so that wasn't any help for me.  I was just planning on using 2TB SSD for additional onboard storage.

Anybody got any ideas on what's next or where I should go to find out?
