Re:X1 G9 ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.70

2021-09-12, 3:51 AM

Conforming that this work-around is successful on my X1 Nano and TB3 Gen2 dock. I'd raised an issue with Premier Support two weeks ago (heard nothing back) and started to research today, and found this thread. I was getting the same errors as everyone else (DP Version 0 reported in the Dock FW update tool). I downloaded the n2tdr44W package, ran it, selected 'extract'. Went into the package directory, ran the installer. Rebooted. Check that the display driver was indeed v9664 (it was), re-ran the Dock FW updater from the package directory in admin mode. The 'check' function, for the first time ever, reported a DP version instead of 'zeros', and ran in about 30 seconds. I hit 'Update' and it successfully ran in 44 seconds. Rebooted. Ran Vantage and it installed the latest certified display driver. All good.

I ended up running the dock firmware updater from my Surface Go 2, which is only USB 3 not Thunderbolt. Worked perfectly fine, updated in minutes. Why didn't I think of that earlier?

Re:X1 G9 ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.70

Oh. My. Goodness. The docking station issues got worse and worse. one big problem was my external screen (set to primary display) going black and hiding even the start button for reboots .

The workaround has worked but it took a couple of attempts to stop the graphics driver auto-updating. All the time screens flickering and blanking. The driver install package had to be extracted to a local folder. The local folder must not be a OneDrive folder or the roll-back installation will crash and you will find yourself with no display adapter driver at all in Device Manager.  Each false attempt of course takes ages. But EVENTUALLY it works. I have had 5 minutes with no blanking of the screens. Fingers crossed that is the end of this frustrating episode.

PS It would help if there were instructions how to access the firmware update by download. I only knew to run Vantage, which requires the internet connection to be on, which allows the machine to undo the driver rollback too soon.

Re:X1 G9 ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.70

@DustyEsky and @jj9ray - I've tried the same steps as you did on my X1 Carbon 9th Gen - Type 20XW. No luck.

Steps followed :

  1. Download and extract the Intel Graphics n2tdr44w.exe downgrade as mentioned by @Andy_Lenovo
  2. Run the Intel Graphics driver downgrade package in Admin mode
  3. Reboot PC
  4. Download and extract the Lenovo 3.1.70 thunderbolt dock firmware upgrade - trdockfw3170.exe driver update
  5. Run the thunderbolt 3.1.70 dock firmware upgrade, clicking the 'Check' button first - interestingly when trying to run the firmware upgrade from Lenovo Vantage, the check button did not appear, only the Upgrade button...strange
    1. Tool ran but took maybe 5 minutes to say it was complete. The DP hub FW version still read 0.0.0...discouraging
  6. Run the thunderbolt 3.1.70 dock firmware upgrade, this time clicking the 'Upgrade' button
    1. Tool ran with similar results as the 'Check' button...no luck, still reported the infamous DP Hub FW version 0.0.0 message and failed all 3 update attempts

The C:\DRIVERS\WIN\FWDOCK\{datetime of extraction}\trdock_debug.log file in read as follows on multiple instances :

2021/09/15 09:16:09 :   check update.log file existence
2021/09/15 09:16:09 :   update.log be genarated, use 0 200ms
2021/09/15 09:16:09 :   DP hub firmware version =0.00.000
2021/09/15 09:16:09 :   DP version reading retry fail, please try to replug your dock and try this update tool again

Did some more digging in the install directory and noticed that there was an 'update.log' file in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\FWDOCK\{datetime of extraction}\DP_HUB.

Opened this file up and the following were the contents :

Version:
Update result: 255
Error description: Can not find Synaptics MST DP hub IC

Tried running the vmmupdater.exe tool from cmdline (vmmupdate.exe -v) to get the current version number of the FW. Windows popup box came up with the same text as the in the log file - Can not find Synaptics MST DP hub IC.

I don't know how the communications to this IC in the hub is done, but it seems that some update is taking down the communications method to it, hence causing the failure in the firmware upgrade tool, since the IC firmware can neither be read (reason for the DP Hub FW version 0.0.0 message), nor updated.

Nevertheless, my 3 monitors are now paperweights until someone figures out a valid engineering solution (not a hack) to this issue. Disappointed...

@Andy_Lenovo or someone else from Lenovo - I hope this message helps. This kind of a fatal failure should be addressed right away. A $300+ dock should not be susceptible to faulty driver updates such as this. Lenovo needs to work on their in-house testing before letting firmware updates go to customers.

Bad luck @Angeld94. My only suggestion is to double-check that the graphics driver didn't sneakily re-update after the downgrade. This happened to me the first time. Does it still report v .9664 in the Device Manager?

And I agree 100% about the disappointing performance and support for this top-of-the range dock for top-of-the-range PCs.

@Andy_Lenovo I don't mean you. You're a star :-)

Thanks for the response, I just double checked my work. Tried it again, checked for the driver version in Device Manager - driver version 27.20.100.9664. Tried running the Thunderbolt FW update tool for the millionth time today and got the usual result - that the DP Hub FW version is ‘0.0.0’…Read from someone that a beta Intel driver version did it for them…will be trying that 27.20.100.9862 driver version and running the Thunderbolt FW update tool on that as well.

UPDATE : tried 27.20.100.9862 Intel graphics driver, and running the Thunderbolt FW update tool...no luck - same results, the Synaptics IC is not recognized.

And I echo jj9ray - I’ve loved my 6 years of usage of Lenovo products, this is honestly the first major issue I’ve had. My comments above are intended to be suggestions for improvement.

@Angeld94   I agree. These are business laptops used by typically business users, on Lenovo's high end laptop models and high end docks (I purchased 2x @ $500AUD each !). Little testing has been done by Lenovo, otherwise the fault would have been detected in development. The firmware update apparently works on the older laptop models; meaning that lenovo didnt test the firmware update on their current models! Given that the issue has been persisting for such a long time and affecting people's work with screens blanking out and getting stuck, constantly having to unplug the dock and plug it back in, take the power out of the dock, the dock USB ports not working, then having to do restarts of the laptop, it's been a real shimozzle to say the least.

Logging calls to Lenovo support including this forum ticket which includes the analysis has been a waste of time and effort; I've just been sent a replacement Dock with the same issue and not even the latest firmware installed : had 3.1.68 and not 3.1.70.

Suggestions to tinker, load this driver, uninstall this and that have not worked. Lots of people have wasted considerable amounts of time trying to fix it and trialling instructions.

Lenovo!!! Pull your socks up and fix this issue once and for all !!!

I do not understand why didn't you try the intel's beta driver? Few posts ago me and some other people wrote that it works.  Not downgrading but upgrading your driver.

Re:X1 G9 ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.70

I did try the 30.0.100.9862 Intel driver yesterday. Messed around with it for a while, tried the Thunderbolt FW upgrade tool multiple times, the tool always read 0.0.0 DP Hub FW Version and my monitors did not work.

Interestingly enough, I turned the laptop and hub off overnight. Came back this morning and the monitors are working through the hub. Literally did not do anything to it since yesterday. The only thing I could think of is that everything cooled down because it was off overnight.

I ran the firmware update tool in the 'check' mode just now, and sure enough, the DP hub FW version reads 5.05.005, not 0.0.0 as it did yesterday.

The sporadic state of this issue worries me even more than it persistently not working.

Honestly, my only advice to other users experiencing the same issues (on X1 Carbon Gen 9 latop anyway) - is upgrade to Intel v30.0.100.9862 Iris Xe graphics driver, let your laptop cool down and most importantly....cross your fingers!

Lenovo - hoping for an explanation and solution on this...your old physical docks that the laptop clipped into never had these issues...you guys need to get your stuff straightened out, this is not acceptable for business-grade equipment.
