I don't know in UK, but in Italy it's impossible to buy the Lenovo FRUs 512 GB SSD.

So I purchased a Crucial M550 512 GB M.2 SATA (300 € from Amazon) and, by the way, writing is really faster than the original Samsung 256 GB.

Re: X1 Gen2 512GB SSD drive -B Connector or B & M Connector? DOES IT MATTER??

2014-07-15, 3:00 AM

Hi,

This link has Lenovo info on the 512GB SSD

http://206.17.82.1/ru_UA/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD031661#1

It does not provide info on the connector.

From the forums, some advice has been to buy the Crucial m550 like at this link

http://us.hardware.info/productinfo/210555/crucial-m550-512gb-m2#tab:specifications

but the pins / connector does NOT match the Sandisk 256GB SSD SD5SG2-256G-1025E  that is now installed.

The Sandisk 256G SSD has the B connector and the Crucial 512GB SSD has the M and B connector.

See the middle of the page at this link

http://www.ramcity.com.au/blog/m.2-ngff-ssd-compatibility-list/189

Does it matter?

Would appreciate any guidance and advice.

Thanks!

Re: X1 Gen2 512GB SSD drive -B Connector or B & M Connector? DOES IT MATTER??

Hi,

in this case it doesn't matter what edge to fit into host with "B" connector - the drive with "B" connector only or "B" and "M" one.

BUT: is there a chance you've mixed up X1C laptop series - 1st vs 2nd generation? X1C Gen 1 (MT 34xx) laptops use SSD with Lenovo proprietary connector - Small Form Factor, SFF. It's not the same as new standart m.2 one. The drive you've mentioned - SanDisk 256GB SSD SD5SG2-256G-1025E (mfg p/n 45N8298, FRU 45N8299) - is exactly in SFF.

X1C Gen 2 (MT 20A7, 20A8) laptops use SSD in m.2 formfactor. Crucial drive you've mentioned is compatible with X1C Gen 2.

The last link in your post is very helpful. I think someone from Lenovo staff here on board will pay attention to that.

x220ForMe

Thanks for the reply. Here is more info....

Photos below on what I have installed. 1) The X1 is a 3444FEU, and 2) a photo from the Crucial CPU-Z program confirms. I am not sure if this is Gen2 or Gen3.

Also, this is an Amazon link to a Crucial M550 512GB SATA M.2 2280 CT512M550SSD4 SSD I want to but not certain it will work.

Thus the entire reason for my posting.

Appreciate all of the insight. Please keep it coming.

OK, thanks for your input.

Let me say I was right in previous post.

1. Your laptop is x1c Gen 1.
2. It uses SSD with proprietary connector, not compatible with modern m.2.
3. SSD in your laptop (mfg p/n 45N8482, FRU 45N8483) is actually SanDisk x100. SanDisk announced a collaboration with Lenovo about this disk usage in x1c in Aug 2012. Read press release below:
http://www.sandisk.com/about-sandisk/press-room/press-releases/2012/sandisk-provides-custom-storage-solution-for-lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon/
4. You might convince yourself even in mechanical incompatibility SFF drive in your x1c and new m.2 SSDs. SFF disk uses connector with pin layout of 6-key-20, m.2 connector has 75 positions and 67 pins. Note SFF isn't compatible with apple laptops as they use another proprietary connector too,
5. The disk from your link will not compatible with your x1c Gen 1 laptop as it's in m.2 formfactor.

The last x1c service parts list doesn't include SSDs 512 Gb. I didn't meet such  drive anywhere.

Again, thanks. I was hoping maybe an alternative might have been found, inspite of the parts list. For me only have 13GB is SSD space left. Time to switch to a T440 as this is the only other optoin my IT guys offer.

Hi ac427,

You can buy those 512GB drives here:

Hope this helps!
