X1 Gen2 fan having seizure. Constant ramp up & down then erratic.

2020-10-19, 6:45 AM

So the new issue for today is after booting from a hibernated state a week ago I get the following message while booting:

One fan error. performance down. continue to boot? [y/n]

Press Y to Continue or N to Shutdown

Never seen this error however after the last Vantage update a few weeks ago the fan on the left (flip unit over and look at it this way) is erratic. Sounds like it's having a seizure. It has no trouble starting and staying running. It sounds like the PWM is super erratic and all over the place. This is a replacement motherboard because the one straight from the factory was bad.

I'll post the link to the video of this issue once it finishes uploading to YouTube.

Windows 10 2004. Latest BIOS v1.3.4 (8/6/2020), vantage fully updated (thermal drivers, etc)

Hello Patg84,

Please try the steps below:

Step. 1 Rolling back to a previous Win 10 Version :

In case it wasn't a Vantage update but a Windows update that caused this:
- Open the Windows 10 Settings Menu by clicking the gear icon in the Windows Start menu, or by pressing “Windows+I” keys.

- Click “Update & security”

- Click the “Recovery” tab on the sidebar.

- Under “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10,” click “Get started.”

- After some elapsed time after last update(10+ days), this option is often not available. Please continue below.

1.2. Restore Point

- There should always be a "restore point" you can choose from "System Recovery"

- Click the Windows key and type "System Recovery" and click "Recovery" in the list.

- Select "Open System Restore" - Click "Next" and select the latest "Restore point" where the device was working.

**Note: System Restore Points will only remove Apps and Programs installed after the selected Restore Point date. It will not remove word/text files or pictures etc.

Step.2 Disable Automatic Hardware drivers update

- Right click the Windows Icon, select the "Search" Function.

- Type "Control Panel" and select "Small icons" or "Large Icons" in the "View By" top right.

- Click the "System Icon"

- Navigate to "Advanced System Settings" -> "Hardware"

- Click "Device Installation Settings" and Select "No"

**This will prevent Windows from interfering with your hardware drivers in future updates, but keep crucial security updates rolling.

Step 3. Updating the Chipset and Thermal Solution Drivers

Make sure you have the latest Chipset, Serial I.O and Management Engine Interface(MEI), Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework (DPTF) and/or Intelligent Thermal Solution (ITS) drivers for your device:

You can find and install the newest drivers from the Lenovo Support Page

Just plot in the serial number of the device and hit enter, might have to press it twice, then head to Drivers & Software then Chipset section.

**Note: Make sure the AC adapter is connected and that you have at least 30% battery charge when performing this update.

Step 4.

Windows Reset/Recovery

After recovery/reset, perform step 2.

Hope this helps.
