X1 - UEFI Only mode doesn't boot

2011-07-18, 15:03 PM

I recently got a new X1, and want to use the UEFI only boot option in the BIOS, however when the setting is changed and I reboot it won't boot into Windows .  It takes me to the Boot Menu/Application Menu screen and stays that way until I switch the BIOS back to Both mode.

I am trying this on the OEM Windows 7 x64 image.  I received a message from Lenovo to update to the latest Huron River drives, but have been unable to find any drivers related to Huron River.  Also I checked Lenovo's and Intel's sites and from what I can tell I have the latest BIOS and Intel drivers loaded.

UEFI BIOS Version: 1.06

Any ideas on how to get this to work or why it doesn't work if that is the case?

Thanks.

You installed the OS when the BIOS was set to Legacy I presume?  Windows isn't capable of switching between both BIOS formats.  Reinstall Windows with the system in UEFI and all will be well. (Note: if you try to use the Lenovo recovery DVDs, you have to be set to Legacy BIOS)

I was actually using the factory image.  I got it working after reinstalling Windows with the BIOS set to UEFI Only, however it causes issues now with my Win PE environment.  I can get around that issue by setting the BIOS to UEFI/Legacy (Both) and setting the boot priority to UEFI first, but once the machine boots up how do you determine if it used UEFI or Legacy at that point?

Figured it out.  On a UEFI system there will be an ESP (System) and a MSR (Reserved) partion.  Also running bcdedit on a UEFI machine should have a boot manager path set to a .efi file and not winload.exe.
