X1 Yoga 20FQ error: detection error on storage device (M.2)

2018-10-03, 11:24 AM

Hi,

Today, 3-Oct-2018, at around 11.30 CET, whilst working on my X1 Yoga 20FQ laptop, system crashed and tried to reboot itself.

First it gave a winowds blue screen (0x000021a) error and then a 2100: detection error on storage device (M.2) error.

I was aware that some updates were running in the background but I can't pinpoint an exact item

Can't reboot at all now - unsure what to do now. Any suggestions?

A current backup is always a good idea.  Power the machine completely off by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds.  If you get a detection error when you start after a full shutdown, the problem is probably hardware.

The drive will need to be replaced, I hope you have everything backed up!

Try to boot in safe mode. No indication your HDD is waxed.  You have a crappy driver in windows land.

www.rescue.org for goodies to verify HDD stability. Not OS stability.

The following software may confirm a dead device.

Thx Rich - I tried that and the issue persists. Tech guy at Lenovo confirms it too and the SSD will be replaced tomorrow.

I had this precise problem on a 2nd gen yoga which I bought a year ago. On the first found, Lenovo sent me a new SSD, but the problem persisted. On the second round, they replaced both SSD and motherboard -- the error returned. On the second round, they sent me a new computer (a 3rd gen, same as yours). After three weeks of operation, it is showing the same error again. I am not going for another round, not just because of the string of bad products, but because service is very tedious here. I am now asking for my money back. Hope you are in better luck!

I just experienced this, and here was my solution:  the SSD (hard drive) had come loose and was intermittently connecting.  I opened the case, reseated the drive, and it appears to be working.   I'm 99% sure that was the only issue...
