FIXED: X1 Yoga display killed with latest Intel HD Graphics Driver

2017-03-14, 15:30 PM

This update (to Version: 21.20.16.4590) totally blacked out my built-in LCD screen and was only able to interact through an HDMI connected monitor. When I uninstalled the driver and defaulted back to the Microsoft Driver, everything was fine with the bulit in display (except no HDMI output obviously). Called Lenovo Support and spent over 2 hours going back and forth with them trying to transfer me to "Premium Software Support" and telling me I had to pay a subscription fee for them to resolve this! I told there there was "No way I was going to pay them to fix a problem they created through their update service." Long Story short, after much digging, I found the previous driver that had been updated, and simply re-installed the old driver (Version: 15.40.14.64.4352) and BAM, everything was back to normal. Here's the steps I took:

1) Download driver from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25620/

2) Downlad the "Zip" file, not the EXE

3) Unzip the file to a temp folder

Get to the display adapter properties and:

4) Choose to 'update driver'

5) 'browse my computer for driver...'

6) 'let me pick from a list...'

7) click 'have disk'

8) browse to unzipped file folder location and into 'Graphics' subfolder

9) select the "igdlh64.inf" file and choose 'Open'

10) Click 'Ok', let the driver install occur and wha-la! My problem was solved.

Good luck everyone.

Re: X1 Yoga (20FR) display freezes with latest Intel HD Graphics Driver

Hi Prabhansh,

That patch did not help on the X1 Yogas. So far the only thing that is working is to stay on the 4444 or 4505 version of the driver.

Hi Chris,

Phil posted:

Prabhansh, your post "Patch module for Intel Panel for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 20FB, 20FC), X1 Yoga" solved the problem of the black screen on my yoga x1 (20FQ) with the last Intel HF graphics 520 driver 21.20.16.4590.

But in your case the model is 20FR but still you can try with above patch otherwise we'll have to wait for the Lenovo to release some patch or hotfix.

Prabhansh

Hi tmontague,

We have some level of enterprise support on our 50+ X1 Yogas so we called Lenovo about this after we reverted to older drivers and tested/confirmed that the 'critial' driver update installed via Lenovo System Update was the problem. On one of our working systems they dispatched (NBD) a tech with a new hard drive. On the other working system they dispatcehd (NBD) a tech with a new system board.

I am glad you also were able to get this resolved!... I am highly annoyed and frustrated with Lenovo's Support over this issue.

Re: X1 Yoga (20FR) display freezes/black screen with spinning dots with latest Intel HD Graphics Dri

2017-03-14, 17:15 PM

Just adding in that  had the same fun little surprise this morning after my driver updated. Now I have no screen on the laptop, it's just black. I can however plug it into an external display to get it to work somwhat (super inconvenient that this happened today as much of the east coast is home under 2 feet of snow).

I go to that link with the patch (I have the X1 Yoga 20FR), but it says it's from 6/6/16, so not really keen on putting that on either. If that were a fix, why not just update the Lenovo companion to fix this issue?

See my previous post "FIXED: X1 Yoga display killed with latest Intel HD Graphics Driver"

As for why Lenovo Support hasn't fixed this issue yet? It's anyone's guess...

It didn't work at first...the reboot is the key.

I can confirm that the patch that was listed on here for the X1 Carbon issue fixed my X1 Yoga as well (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds118463).

Now, as to why that was released n 8/23/2016 and I have been screwing around with this all day today is another story that someone at Lenovo should really look into.

I also can confirm, that the patch that was listed above fixed our problems with X1 Carbon (20FB). After installing the patch, screen gets alive again. And I can also confirm, that installing the patch before updating to 21.20.16.4590 works, so if you wish to update, you shuld first install the patch.

Thank you!

Hi Matimias,

Glad to hear :smileyhappy: that issue was sorted out by patch, already it was posted to you in earlier reply.

Cheers

Prabhansh
