X1 Yoga 2nd Gen is making hard disc noise - ?!?

2017-05-30, 21:51 PM

I know this sounds wild, but my new X1 Yoga with 1tb PCI express solid state drive make subtle noises that sound almost exactly like a spinning hard drive's head movements!

I checked the hardware manual and can tell that the noise is coming from the area of the M.2 SSD, and yes I know it's impossible because there are no moving parts in an SSD.  However, the noise sounds exactly like the head seeking and writing on an old style hard drive!

This is not related to the fan, as that becomes audible when the processor is working hard and sounds like a normal fan. The 'simulated' HDD noise happens when lots of read / write activity is taking place, such as during boot or general disk intensive activities.

It's not really a problem, just a very strange thing to be hearing. Any thoughts on what this is and why it is audible?

Whenever anything really weird is going on, I prefer to carry the machine into a dealer who does warranty service.  That way both of you are looking at and listening to the same thing.  A Premier Dealer would be best if one is convenient.

No, I don't think it is a problem.  It is just a part of the computer, but I was hoping someone knowledgeable from Lenovo would explain what it is!  How can an M.2 drive make what sounds like HDD head seeking noises?

I've checked with Lenovo. They suspect it's a problem with the thermal fan. Let's see if it fixes the problem after they replace it.

So, the thermal fan was replaced and when I restarted the laptop to check the sound was still there and I let the repair technician listen to it. He then said it was the graphics adaptor that was causing the sound and proceeded to order a new motherboard for me.

A few days later, the motherboard arrived and he swapped out my old motherboard and the recently replaced thermal fan as the new motherboard also came with a thermal fan. With the new motherboard and new thermal fan, I can still hear the buzzing/ticking sound from under my keyboard especially when the room is quiet. This sound only starts when Windows is running and is not heard at all when I enter into BIOS. I didn't manage to demonstrate this to the technician as the environment was quite noisy and I couldn't hear the sound after the motherboard replacement.

I'm starting to wonder if this could be an inherent design of the Gen 2 X1 Yoga. Another possibility could be the battery. I'm still deciding whether I should ignore the sound and just live with it or ask for another repair. If it's only the both of us with this problem, then something is definitely not right. If everybody else has this sound then it probably is the design of this laptop and the only way to get rid of it is to change to a different laptop. The Gen 2 X1 Yoga is a very nice laptop and I hope I do not have to change it to something else.

Despite the shortcomings of this laptop, Lenovo support had been extremely good to me and had sent the technician to me for onsite repair instead of having it repaired at the depot as per warranty.

This has been my guess - there is something about this design that causes what seems to be hard drive noises.  But they are very subtle!

So really, it doesn't bother me at all.  I am mainly concerned that something could be wrong in there - and from your report it sounds like it is just the way this computer is.  Maybe someday a Lenovo / Thinkpad engineer will chime in and tell us why the noises are there.

Loving the computer - it really is everything I was hoping it would be.

If you look up coil whine you'll see that it's a really common problem with graphics cards, and Thinkpads seem to suffer from it too.
