X1 Yoga 3 throttling issue

2018-06-06, 13:32 PM

I have a problem with the performance of my Lenovo X1 Yoga 3rd generation.

The CPU performance is throttled when core temperature reaches 85C. The i7-8550u processor is not supposed to throttle until it reaches 100C (and this is also what other X1Y3 owners seem to report), but for some reason my specific laptop is configured differently.

In addition, the fan fails to spin up during heavy load, probably because it is temperature controlled. This causes additional throttling.

The result is that my laptop performs poorly under heavy CPU load.

I have attached a screenshot from Throttlestop, which displays the temperature the CPU is configured to throttle at.

I have tried updating to the latest firmware and I have updated all drivers, but the problem persists.

Can I do anything to resolve this issue?

Indeed it is impossible to use this laptop to do anything CPU heavy, we are seeing how to return it to Lenovo as it just a nice piece of black useless metal.

As long as CPU load is a big high, my laptop will trottle to 200Mhz and remain unusable for minutes :( Really really bad.

After 1 month with it I recommend you return it.

I'd call support. I'm certainly not having issues with throttling on mine and i'm not seeing any prevalence of it in forums. No idea what that other poster is talking about, of course it should (and does) perform intensive tasks, I use mine daily for photo, video editing, art apps/software, etc. and it handles it all easily (although I have other ownership issues).

So i decided to call support, they were pretty unhelpful. They suggested I ship it in for repair, the onsite-support would probably not be able to diagnose the issue.

If there is some (hidden) UEFI setting that is causing my laptop to throttle at 85C, I wonder if it would be possible to restore it to the correct settings using the Settings Capture/Playback Utility. Would you mind capturing your BIOS settings using the utility and posting the file here?

I tried a clean install of windows, this fixed the problem.

I am having the same issue of the thermal limit being set to 85C. So a clean install of windows changed the PROCHOT? I tried a clean install and nothing changed?! CPU still throttles at 85C and PROCHOT at 85C. This leads to a Cinebench score, which is around 450 - so terrible!!
