X1 Yoga 3rd Gen Battery Life Less Than 8 Hours

I read a couple reviews saying that X1Y3 can last up to 15 hours because the HDR screen drains a lot less power than the OLED on X1Y2. However, I just got my X1Y3 and noticed that the battery can't last even an 8 to 5 school day (document viewing, note taking with the Think Pen, Facebook, Google Drive, etc).

The brightness is usually set at "darker" or "suggested" in tablet mode and about 1/3 of the bar in regular laptop mode.

Is that everyone's experience? Anything I can do to extend the battery life and use the laptop reasonably comfortably?

Thanks so much!

Jack

Re: X1 Yoga 3rd Gen Battery Life Less Than a Day

OLED suppose to be more power efficient than IPS. See attached comparison by HotHardware. HDR screen theoretically draw more power due the pixel brightness it needs to push.

How many hours are you getting exactly? 5~8 hours should be consider normal. Anything less than 5 hours may suggest something is wrong. The 15.5 hr advertised battery is playing video without wifi at lowest brightness. I would suggest you open the Lenovo Vantage metro app and check battery information. Does battery full charge capacity show 57wh or more?

Thanks for your reply!

It's about 7 hours of constant use. Battery info says design capacity is 54.06 Wh, and the actual capacity is 54.51 Wh.

7 hours is much better than my OLED 2nd gen X1 Yoga, which maybe gets 4.5 hours if i do nothing on it.

Advertised all day battery life is a scam and has been for years.

I have the same issue with TP YX1 3rd Gen. I just recieved my unit but I am utterly disappointed with the battery. I am thinking about returning it. Lenovo has no soution for this

Well, OLED definitely has shorter battery time. Many posts about this here.

What are you getting? I wrote elsewhere that with the i7 CPU and with the HDR screen set to minimum brightness and doing absolutely nothing the power draw is about 3.2W, so with a 55Wh battery that comes down to 17h of battery life. Moderately raising the brightness and just doing some typing in Word increases the power draw to 5-7W, bringing battery life down to about 9h. So you can reach 8-9 hours but only if you're doing pretty light work in a not too bright room.

To try to limit power draw, use Windows Store apps as much as possible, and use Edge instead of Chrome. And look into setting up a hosts file, e.g. from here. This stops many ads from even downloading, so that can drop the CPU use while browsing. Just make sure how to disable it, because sometimes (rarely though) it might break a website.

Solution 1: charge the laptop over lunch, it really does charge fast.

Solution 2: get an external battery that supports the X1Y3 charger voltage. Pricy, and another pound in your bag..

Solution 3: get another machine, but only after a lot of research; don't just believe the stated battery life.

I am talking about 500 nits, but I used it with lowest brightness. I don't know if 270 nit with WQhD has the same problem
