Re: X1 Yoga 3rd gen. CPU frequency pegged at max

I just used the normal Microsoft media creation tool, the newer equipment UEFI has the key stored in your BIOS.

Pretty easy process, going to install the thinkvantage software to keep my drivers updated but everything worked out of the box after the install finished.

Well, I tried adding back the other pwer plans using the CSEnabled registry key, and it made it so i couldn't use sleep!

Well, between Microsoft dumbing down the OS to the point that it isn't configurable enough and Lenovo messing up the power settings, blech...

I am very happy with my X1C in every other way.  Good ol' Thinkpad keyboard, so much better than a surface book... :)

Had this same problem, and can confirm that a clean install with stock Windows 10 takes care of it. I downloaded Vantage through the Microsoft Store for the Lenovo updates, and had a problem connecting to their servers through the app. I followed the instructions found at this link...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Pre-Installed-Lenovo-Software/Can-t-sign-in-to-Lenovo-Vantage/m-p/4015369, which worked and all is back to the way it was, minus the pinned turbo speeds and high temps. Highly recommend this, rather than waiting for an update as I honestly can't see any downside so far other than the hassle.

Can confirm stock Windows behaves as expected and things are cooler and quieter. In fact, I'm seeing some other interesting differences, such as Windows Sonic support which for whatever reason wasn't showing up before...

Question for those of you who tried reverting to stock Windows:

I tried that and it does indeed stop the CPU from operating at max frequency all the time, instead stepping up and down as you'd expect. However, the fan is now a lot more "touchy" -- in day to day work, nothing too taxing, it's often on (but very low speed), but when things get marginally taxed it spins up and down quite a bit. It's no longer the "on full blast/totally off" mode that it was with the CPU pegged in turbo boost as it actually goes through different speeds.

Does anyone else that tried a stock Windows install see this behavior? If so, I'm curious which drivers you installed...I installed the full suite, including the "intelligent thermal driver" type drivers.

I decided to reninstall windows too, and power management now works correctly.  And yes, under hard load, it will still spin up th ehard drive and get warmer, but now it's more like other laptops I have used.

The only lenovo drivers I installed were for video and NIC.

@jefferai

Don't know if this can be the case but, could it be that TDP thresholds changed due to the fresh installation? Maybe check with Intel XTU. I don't personally know if it's a registry or BIOS thing.

Hi guys,

I have the exact same problem with my brand new T580. Tried to restore Windows multiple times, played with BIOS settings, tried a factory reset with the Lenovo tool, nothing worked. Finally sent back the laptop to Lenovo and should receive it 'repaired' this afternoon.

As I'm pretty sure they did nothing to the laptop, I'll try to install a clean Windows this afternoon too.

I'll keep you up to date.

Received my T580 2 hours ago, as expected, no repairs done even if Lenovo claimed the opposite.

Just installed a clean Win 10 and everything works now perfectly, thank you very much for the tip! I just had to force UEFI boot in the bios because I was unable to format partitions during setup. Now the bios is back to factory settings and everything's good.

Thank's again!
