X1 Yoga 3rd gen fan louder after current bios update

2019-04-27, 19:45 PM
I recently (about one week ago) updated my bios to the current version due to the "security fix" in the changelog. New bios version is: N25ET44W 1.30 After this update the computer appears significantly louder. I bought this computer without OS and did a clean win10 install. I fired up tpfancontrol to watch the cpu temps as well as the fan speed and noticed that the fan is off until the cpu reaches 95C. (after boot) Then the fan kicks in with +5000rpm (airplane starting) and then settles for 4500 rpm. It eventually goes quiet if I don't use the pc and the temps go down far enough. The minimum fan speed from tpfancontrol (speed 1) used to be 3000 rpm and is now 4500 rpm, so the first three steps (1~3000, 2~3800, 3~4500) were merged into one. The 3000 rpm setting cannot be reached no matter what I do. I toggled the two different cpu performance modes in the bios as well as the windows cooling setting in the energy plan. I also created a new power profile, but no improvement. My issue is not the fan runtime, but the loudness. Before the fan was mostly running quietly at low rpm, now it is not running and then going at full speed instead of cooling the computer with low noise. Does anybody have an idea how to get the systme quiet again? Is there a source to get the old bios and to downgrade? I don't like that but I would like to find out if the bios safety vulnerability is applicable to my use case. -Jan

Hi there, nice findings :( You can downgrade by downloading BIOS 1.29 here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nl/de/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-yoga-3rd-gen-type-20ld-20le-20lf-20lg/20ld/20ld0017us/r90pxbn3/downloads Choose bios and you'll see the link https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n25uj20w.exe https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n25uj20w.txt replace that by the name of the former Bios (in your case /n25uj19w.exe, which is 1.29) One can always download earlier versions by this scheme. Don't forget to allow Bios downgrade in Bios Settings. Did you try to reset Bios to default values after the Bios update? This could be the ECP 1.13 vs. ECP 1.12 (Bios 1.29). X1Y3 was throtteling at high load. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3-throttling-issue/td-p/4101163 Please report further. Thanks
