After a lot of experimenting and a broken WQHD screen, I've finally figured out how to upgrade these. It looks awesome and feels well worth it. Best of all, the screens themselves are quite cheap when you know where to look.
I bought the screen from Taobao.com using Superbuy. They're an agency that reships from China so overall the screen itself cost about $120 shipped to me. This is useful too for any OLED users that have the flicker issue - v cheap to replace versus eBay prices.
I had to replace the lid back and the two cables 01aw979, 01aw980, 01aw977. Most importantly and most difficult I needed to source the DC adapter board 00NY439 which is out of stock most places.
But after a wait, I've gotten it all assembled and it works and looks great. Plus cheap for those with OLED flicker issues.

Hey bobbysteel, I am having a black line on the screen when the brightness is turned on at higher than 40%.
My warranty expires 2 months ago (...yea lenovo definitely planned this...), already contacted technical support but I am trying to think of the worst scenario, which is replacing it myself.
Is there a link for a walkthrough replacement of the screen?

Yep it's quite easy! Check the videos here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/HT505031
the LCD panel assembly removal is the right one. Quite easy.
As for the panel itself, I can recommend this one https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=565475361168&spm=1101.1101.N.N.9d0bab4
buy via Superbuy and just plug in that URL. $145 bucks roughly, plus probably $30 shipping to USA.

Hey man thanks for replying.
Good to know that it's easy to replace (and doable). Mine is 2017 yoga x1 2nd gen. Is the 1st gen OLED (the one you linked on TaoBao) the same as the 2nd one?
I am waiting for the "technical" support to see if they will replace the unit for me as I am okay with giving up the OLED display if they can replace it with the X1Y3's HDR WQHD display.

Yep the Gen 1 and Gen 2 OLEDs are the same. On Taobao you'd just look for 2560 x1 OLED and you'll find it. It has two 40-pin connectors on the back for reference. Good luck!
