Your memory is soldered on the board.
Did you mean swap out your 256GB SSD and put in a new 1TB SSD? -or- add 1TB HDD?
Crucial MX200 500GB M.2 Type 2280 (Single Sided) Internal SSD is $158.00 US.
I dont know which SSD you have now:
Some: M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s
Some: M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s
Please state your Model number(not serial number). I need to know which X1 carbon you have.

Did you look at the psref? It states soldered memory. No memory slots.
Per your model number, your machine spec is here:
memory: 8GB Soldered
storage: 256GB SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe Opal2
Removal and install instructions are here. Click on the m.2 SSD section.
Goggle search the storage specs. Several vendors will show up.
