Re: X1 Yoga Touch Screen No Longer Working

2016-09-20, 19:01 PM

I also had the same problem as others in this thread. My touch screen and pen stopped working. The devices were missing from device manager and the firmware update would exit immediately without doing anything. I called Lenovo support and the agent didn't seem to know anything about this obviously widespread issue. She asked if I had installed the latest drivers and when I said I had, without any further troubleshooting, she said the screen would need to be replaced. Instead of doing that, I extracted the firmware update files and ran the executables manually, one by one. After doing this, the pen input and touchscreen devices all showed up in device manager and began working.

I don't know what is going on over at Lenovo, but this "permanent fix" updater appears to have been rushed out the door without any significant testing and the support agents have not been trained to deal with this ongoing issue. Someone needs to address this problem and they need to do it quickly. This is not the kind of service I expect from a company like Lenovo.

Re: X1 Yoga Touch Screen No Longer Working

I looked over the script included in the firmware.exe archive and I believe that the reason it does not work is that it first runs a mysterious utility signed by Wacom called HIDIdent.exe. I can't tell what this utility is supposed to do, but the script passes it a list of identifiers and apparently expects to receive a number greater than or equal to 0 in return. On my system, when the wacom and pen devices were missing from device manager, the utility returned -1 and the script exited immediately without running any of the firmware updaters and without providing any output or user notification. I tested it again after I had manually run the firmware updaters and fixed my touchscreen and it then returned 7, which caused the script to run the 8th firmware updater in the list, in my case, 5095_v0005_rev02.exe

TO LENOVO: Your firmware updater does not detect the touch input devices and so it doesn't update the firmware. Work on your quality control and testing with these updates.

I'll also confirm Akuma's process works.  The tool by itself is not functional, but extracting and running the .exe's manually works.  The first one fixed mine.  I manage these X1s in my organization, we have 25 so far.  I've had two touchscreen issues, the first time (4 months ago) Lenovo support couldn't do anything and I had to send the laptop into the service center, but it came back working and haven't had any other issues with that machine.  The second time I looked into this forum instead of sending the machine in.

In response to customer feedback regarding X1 Yoga Touchscreen firmware failure to install while antivirus programs are running, Lenovo will include a note to disable antivirus programs during installation.

Thank you,

Can anyone still experiencing this issue comment on whether disabling antivirus allows the firmware updater utility to work?

I would like to find out which antivirus programs prevent the firmware update from installing to provide this information to Think Engineering.

Thank you,

My X1 Yoga OLED touch screen is completely missing from the device manager (no related entries under Human Interface Devices). So no amount of worrying about antivirus will bring back my touch screen, I think.

@guho: Did you try running the firmware update tool after disabling your antivirus?

The firmware tool is located here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-X-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-X1-Yoga-Type-20FQ-20FR/downloads/DS112340

Make sure to disable any AV products and then execute the tool from an account with administrator permissions on your machine. It should start up a graphical utility asking you to accept the terms and conditions and then it will apply the update. If nothing happens, then disabling your AV didn't allow the program to work, but you should still be able to run it manually. Please post back here with your results

Re: X1 Yoga Touch Screen No Longer Working

My X1 yoga touch screen was plagued with the awful ghost touching bug similarly found in the regular lenovo yoga models. It is an extremely irritating bug for an 1800$ laptop. The screen draws a bunch of wacky grey lines all over the place every time I touch the screen, and it doesnt do what I want it to.

I tried getting the June 19th patch for the touch screen and when it opened and installed it gets to the last prompt where it asks to open the update application after this finishes, the application wont open ( it did the first time but then my battery died, and now it wont open).  The wacom patch removed the old drivers and now my touch screen doesnt work at all.

You should never run a firmware update while on battery power and most certainly not when the battery is low - a power loss during a firmware update could permanently damage your hardware. A very prominent warning to this effect should have been displayed before the updater ran the first time. You could try updating the firmware manually by extracting the executables from the archive as described in earlier posts. If that doesn't work, you probably need to call customer support.
