X1 carbon Gen 5 (2017) weird fan burst

2020-03-23, 0:51 AM

Hi,

I'm experiencing a weird pattern of fan noise since day one of having this machine. Whenever the fan kicks in, it always starts with full speed for about a second, and then either stops completely or starts gradually again from 0 speed. If the fan runs for a while, it then always stops by making another 1-second full-speed burst. It became more and more noticeable as it ages and the fan runs more and more often.

I think I'm OK with the fan gradually accelerating, but not this sudden up-down-up pattern. I honestly haven't seen anything like this on any other machines.

Note that I've just installed the latest BIOS and drivers on Windows, although I'm using Linux much more often. This issue appears on both Linux and Windows.

Any solutions?

Hello,

My X1 Carbon Gen 5 does that at boot and when my security is monitoring the system - every few minutes. I don't know if that is what is happening  on your X1C but just thought I would mention it.

well I don't think that's what's happening on my machine. I can leave it idle for hours without any fan noise. It only happens when the fan actually _needs_ to run.
