X1 does not charge + really weird behavior - possibly Thunderbolt software broken | Please HELP!

2019-05-15, 1:26 AM

Hi - I really REALLY need some help.

I plugged in a Thunderbolt 3 device and my X1 froze. After an hour of hoping that it might un-freeze, I plugged the device out and rebooted the PC.

After that, my computer makes the "unplug" sound every 2 seconds, all my icons seem to "refresh" along with the sound, things pop in and out of tray (looks like Thunderbolt-related software).

What is worse, the port indicates that it is charging even when the cord is unplugged. When the cord is plugged it says it is charging but in fact it is not...

Tried re-booting and installing Thunderbolt firmware, but an error pops up when I try to do that...

Please help :(

Can you please run Vantage and tell me what is shown for Device Make and Product Number at the bottom?

If you don't have Vantage, then run msinfo32 and tell me what is shown for System Model.

If it's still doing the unplug/replug 2 second cycle, use the reset hole on the bottom of the laptop.

It will basically cut all power to the laptop (so far as I am aware) and fully powercycle it. Somehow, this temporarily resolves the issue, but it may come back later when using a TB3 device.

OK, so this did indeed help with the basic problem of the device not charging which is AWESOME - thank you! I did not even know that there is a hard reset beyond holding the power button for 5 sec.

However, the Thunderbolt device still freezes my PC when I plug it in and, what is potentially more worrying, after a freeze I tried using the hard reset again and it did not work.

Do you have any experience with either? Connecting a TB3 eGPU or hard reset not working?

Thank you so much!

Please reboot and press F1 to enter BIOS setup.  The go to Config -> Thunderbolt menu and check the Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode setting.  For Windows 10, this should be Disabled.

If it's Enabled, please set it to Disabled and press F10 to save & exit.

If it's Disabled, then I've heard from other customers that toggling to enabled -> reboot -> disabled can fix some strange problems.  So can you please try that?

Also, please try updating the Thunderbolt firmware BEFORE you get into the problem state.

I checked the BIOS and it was fine. Did not try the assist as it seems that the problem is now gone.

This said, I am not sure why it went away - I kind of acted like a crazy person: kept re-booting the PC and plugging the TB3 eGPU in and out at different moments (e.g. when the PC is shut down, on log in screen, on desktop, etc.). It kept crashing/freezing and I had to do soft resets (holding the power button) and one hard one (worryingly, I could not do it again...), updated all the firmware through ThinkPad Vantage in the meantime and in the end it went away.

Maybe this helps others - thank you for all your help!

Yeah, this is very much my experience with my TB3 eGPU dock and my X1C6.

Since the issue is now intermittent, I've just shelved my TB3 eGPU dock and now use a simple USB-C PD hub (which does what I want perfectly, save for the lack of a GPU. I'll resolve that with whatever PC I buy to replace this).
