X1 extreme gen 2 extreme screen dimming (or brightness adjustment)

2019-11-10, 0:57 AM

So I just got my x1 extreme gen 2 the other day (the 1080p panel), and on brightnesses 30% or lower, I ALWAYS notice my screen dim or adjust brightness whenever I use another task. For example, switching between a browser tab on chrome, my screen will dim or go brighter depending on the web page. When I minimize a window, the screen will decide to dim a little bit. Another example is whenever there's a prompt to open a program, after I hit yes (or no), the screen brightness adjustment after the transition becomes very very apparent..

It's VERY frustrating and I haven't found a fix for it yet. The only option I have to adjust display in the power settings are "turn display off after". I also have no option for adaptive brightness, so at this point im wondering what's causing this issue when this device itself is brand new.

I am on windows 10 home edition.

I assume that you are using the Intel GPU. Try to turn off the power saving entry on the control panel.

I can't find the option to change in the control panel. I tried changin the Intel CPU to performance maximum but that didnt work, I still get the issue.

Uninstall the Lenovo Vantage application, restart system, then reinstall Vantage from the Microsoft Store. Perhaps something is out of sync.

i just tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the store, and I still get the issue.

On higher brightnesses, this issue is noticiable. But if I have the brightness completely turned down, I can't notice the change. It can happen when I have the brightness set between 10% and 35%, and it's noticable when changing from a dark screen to a lighter screen (example: switching from a dark web page to a white web page or vice versa).

I've also tried changing the intel graphics power plan from "Medium power saving" to "maximum performance" and I still notice the issue.

I'm out of ideas. Perhaps a new Intel Graphics driver in the future will correct the issue. I do not have the problem on my P53 when using the Intel 630 graphics gpu.

it's most likely a battery saving issue. I plugged in my laptop and didn't have the issue there at all.

Kinda resurrecting an old thread here, but wanted to share what I know about this.

This is intended behaviour. I also found it annoying, but it is Intel GPU related power saving feature.

Luckily you can disable it! Go to "Intel Graphics Control Panel" -> Power -> Disable "Display Power Saving Technology". If you have multiple power plans, you need to change this for all of them.
