X120e - HDMI + OSD

2011-04-13, 22:58 PM

Getting a strange issue. When my X120e is plugged into my HDTV via HDMI, any time a sound is played (and thus passed through HDMI), the Lenovo OSD volume indicator will pop up. So, as you can imagine, it gets quite annoying. Anyone else notice this problem?

Yes, I noticed this too. The volume display will appear and disappear (as if you made a volume change) at the beginning of any audio playback, whether it's the "ding" noise you get when you adjust the volume slider in the notification area, or when you start a video.

I'm guessing it might have something to do with the HDMI audio passthru, but I haven't spent any time messing with settings.

@kubel,

When you hook the HDMI to HDMI (TV?) Is it extended desktop or clone? This happens in video or any audio files? I presume that you have updated all the drivers for the X120e? There are new BIOS, Power manager and Power management driver as well.

If you could share a short clip, it would be great as well.

It seems when Windows triggers certain noises, the OSD indicator appears. Happens on at least my T400, friends' two T510's.

For example, setting the Windows sound scheme to something non-silent (default one works) and then backspacing in an empty textbox (causes a ding, and hence the OSD to appear). Doesn't happen when sound scheme is all silent, which is the case for my T400.

EDIT: Never mind; mine doesn't do that anymore. Probably got fixed and I never noticed.

@JameZ,

Latest BIOS, drivers, and a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit.

It's happening in all modes (except Projector disconnected mode, when no signal is sent through HDMI). The OSD will always appear on the primary display (or both when duplicated).

Basically, any time an audio file is started, it will display the OSD volume indicator. So if I receive an instant message, it will pop up. If I am navigating in Windows Explorer, it will pop up every time I open a folder. If I receive an audible notification in Outlook, it will pop up. If I right click and open a media file, it will pop up a volume indicator- but I can stop, pause, seek without getting another indicator. But as soon as I skip to another file, it will pop up another indicator.

I forgot to add, this only happens on my HDTV. When I connect it to a monitor using an HDMI-DVI adapter, it doesn't happen.

Likely because the audio from the HDMI port is not used, only the video when usiing a DVI adapter.

I don't have a HDMI TV to try it myself.

@All,

LANOrge dropped me a PM on this. He mentioned that this issue has been escalated to engineering.

Will keep everyone posted if there are updates from them.
