X120e and Gobi 3G modems

I have several questions about using the Gobi 2000/3000 modems on the X120e:

1) Must I buy the Gobi 3000 from the Lenovo website, or will the Gobi 2000 work on the X120e? Also if I get it from another vendor will it be the same (have the same form factor to fit)?

2) Others have posted that the Gobi 2000 is unlocked (works with carriers around the world), is that the case for the 3000?

3) For installation on the X120e, how accessible is the SIM on the 2000/3000? I may have to switch out the SIM frequently and having to open up the computer to get to it would not be feasible.

Hi baldursgate and welcome to the community,

As far as accessibility goes, here's how to get to the slot.

I'm not sure about your other questions, except to say that whatever card you put in there should be a Lenovo branded card or you may get an unauthorized card error at bootup.

Re: X120e and Gobi 3G modems

The lenovo branded gobi 2000 will surely work (is listed on the HMM), other unlisted card will likely work too, like the f3507g.

Non lenovo cards will be blocked unless you use a modded bios.

GOBI 2000 - yes!

GOBI 3000 - isn't working. Which is a real bummer. It's a better card, and on the sales website they write that it is compatible. I bought the card and a 120e and got it earlier this week. Put the card in and it says unauthorized card. The BIOS blocks it. I'm debating on sending it back in exchange for a 2000 or waiting a bit and seeing if a patch will come out.

Oh as for your other questions:

You have to put the card in yourself. I imagine that the same GOBI 2000 from any other vendor would fit.

The SIM card fits into a small slot inside the laptop after you take the panel cover the underside off. There are only three screws needed to open the underside and they are built into the cover so they can't fall out and get lost. I would say it only would take you 60 seconds to do it once you've done it once.

AFAIK A modded bios is available, just google for " x120e whitelist removed"

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
