X1C gen3 fail to upgrade BIOS

Hi, All

I try to upgrade the BIOS of my x1c gen3 20BS, using a bootable USB disk.

I download the 1.3 BIOS bootable CD,  n14ur12w.iso  from http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds101953. and burn it to the USB disk with these cmd:

geteltorito -o bios.img n14ur12w.iso
dd if=bios.img of=/dev/sdb

Then I boot with is usb disk and follow the BIOS update instruction to upgrade BIOS.

But I think I fail with a last step.

The x1c reboot with ThinkPad Logo and stop booting.

I have to remove the AC adapter and push the hard reset button to power off the x1c.

And then I power on x1c again, I found that the ECP ID is upgrade to 1.09, but UEFI BIOS ID is still 1.10(not 1.13)

Could you help me check which step I miss?

Or any other suggest for BIOS upgrade with my x1c?

Thanks.

Re: X1C gen3 fail to upgrade BIOS

Hello, jimmystone

As I understand, there was an error of the BIOS image extraction from the ISO file.
Take a look at this page:
https://johnleach.co.uk/words/1641/booting-thinkpad-firmware-updater-from-a-usb-key

Regarding an alternate methode to flash the BIOS, it's possible to use EFI flash tool (ShellFlash) on the USB stick. But preparation of such media is a bit complicated for the x1c gen3 as there isn't tools needed in its BIOS upgrade package.

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g  |  x220 • hdd, msata ssd, 3g, wifi, gps -- unique hand-made config
x1c Gen3 (2015) • WQHD MT IPS, PCIe ssd
Miix 2 10"  |  Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android 5.0), BKC800 BT Keyboard, FolioCase
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 wireless router, hdd 1 TB, BT speaker, power bank

Re: X1C gen3 fail to upgrade BIOS

Hi, x220forme

I do not find any extraction error in the page you mention about.

And I can make a bootable u-disk with my BIOS iso.

How can I check my u-disk if there is something wrong or not?

Re: X1C gen3 fail to upgrade BIOS

I meant the commands/keys for img extraction in your post and in the page above differ. Not sure whether it's significant.

x1c gen3 fail to upgrade BIOS but ECP upgrade done

Hi, All

I try to upgrade the BIOS of my x1c gen3 20BS, and BIOS update utility for windows http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-... UEFI: 1.13 / ECP: 1.09

I am working on windows 8

I follow the utility's instruction and install the tool, run the tool, and reboot the OS, everything seem fine, but when I check the BIOS again, I found the BIOS vesion is still 1.10, but ECP upgrade to 1.09. I wonder why I cannot upgrade my BIOS, anyone could help, many thanks.
