X1E G1 Strange Temperature Behavior

2020-10-12, 14:05 PM

I have had my X1 Extreme Gen 1 for over a year and it has behaved great. Recently I am having a curious behavior regarding temperature. I have a game I like to play and it has always maintained a CPU temperature of around 76 C using the Intel graphics chip, not the Nvidia. Recently I will go for 5 days and the temperature is where I would expect when playing the game, 76C. Then, for no apparent reason, (no changes to anything) I will start the game and it will play at 96C. I have to restart the computer for the game to then play at the 76C.

Any ideas, thoughts or questions  appreciated

There might be some background, OS-related task running at the same time.  This might be a case where it would run cooler using nVIDIA

Rich,

Thank you for the suggestion. I check Task Manager when this temperature anomaly happens looking for any high CPU usage and found none. Also why did this problem only start last month? Usually a scheduled task, like Windows Update, happens regularly and would have been apparent when I first owned the laptop. And why does restarting the laptop stop the temperature operating range for this one game?

Thank you again for your ideas.

Have you tried the following?

1) Running benchmarks: Cinebench R15, R20, PCmark, Intel XTU stress test

2) Re-pasting

3) Installing a clean Windows

4) Updatting Bios, FW, Windows and drivers to thr latest with "Windows Performance power setting"

5) Physically cleaning your fans and heat grills

My ThinkPad X1 Extreme, Gen1 (i7-8750H, 32GB, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo) was supposed to get around 1050 points in Cinebench R15 (multicore average after 20 runs) as reported by the many big review platforms (NotebookCheck, MobileTechReview yet instead I got 730 :(

After re-pasting using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut with cooling pads on all heat components, I could get 865 points which is still awful for a $3000 "top of the line" laptop.

Once the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Gen2 comes with built-in webcam (AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS R15: 1863, R20: 4288) or Legion 5 with RTX 2060 and better keyboard (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, R15: 1845, R20: 4339), my ThinkPad X1E lands on ebay.

I really hope Lenovo brings out a Ryzen 9 5900HS (35Watt) CPU for the completely re-designed X1 Extreme Gen4.
