Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

X1E with 8300h throttles after 1s of cinebench r20. CPU reach 100C and clocks of all cores is cut. Cinebench R20 result is 1637.
Is temperature change from 50C to 100C after 1s load normal?

Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

@gm20 your issue seems to be just good old thermal throttling at 100 C. This thread discusses a bit more nuanced issue related to turning on Hyper-V causing the thermal throttling to kick in already at 80 C.

For your problem, I would love to say it's not normal to experience thermal throttling immediately, but unfortunately with how the machine is cooled, it's very likely you'll start thermal throttling. You could try undervolting (helps some) or repasting (might help a lot, but might also not help at all). Those usually help to lower the temperatures and lets the cpu reach higher clocks before thermal throttling, so you'll get somewhat better performance. You can also try using tpfancontrol to force the fans on full blast, or use a cooling mat for some extra cooling, but those are noisy solutions.

Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

@mnylen

I think throttling on 82 C is related with selected power profile rather with virtualization (i have bios 1.19 with virtualization enabled).

On "Battery saver" and "Ballanced" i have 82 C temperature limit, but on "Best performance", cpu can reach 97-100 C.

Yeah. Try it with hyper-v on and you'll see all power profiles throttle at 80 C. The virtualization alone doesn't cause issues. The issue seems to be that the software can't set the temperature target suitable for the selected power profile when hyper-v is enabled -> it will be stuck at the default, which is 80 C

You may be right, I'm using VirtualBox with KVM virtualization and I don't see 80 C throttling.

Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

The thing that triggers the 80C throttling is enabling the Hyper-V feature in Windows. Virtualbox doesn't require Hyper-V.

Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

1s thermal throttling has been fixed by repaste cpu & gpu. Probably something was wrong with genuine thermal paste.

Now I have much better Cinebench R20 score - 2055 pts (with 0,050V undervolt8300h-repaste.jpg

Re: X1E X1 Extreme throttles at 80C with BIOS Virtualization On

Does anyone know of someone on Microsoft's Hyper-V team that might be able to assist with this? As Lenovo are not commenting.

I'm likely to sell my X1E due to this problem and switch to a competitor. It's such a shame as this was my first ThinkPad and will likely be my last after this and other quality issues.
