X1E2 Camera not working since Windows 1909 update

2019-12-11, 16:30 PM

Since I updated to Windows 1909, the camera is not working any more (among all the other reported problems this laptop has). Therefore Windows Hello camera login is also not working. Before it was working flawlessly.

  • When opening the Windows "Camera" app, it displays a black screen most of the time; sometimes it displays a single still frame after some time (same behavior in any other application using the camera)
  • Apps are granted access in Windows privacy settings
  • Camera LED goes on, same for the red IR LED with Windows Hello, so the hardware itself is working
  • I did not close the privacy shield ;)
  • I have tried uninstalling/installing drivers, no change
  • I followed this guide: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht509394 No mention about X1E camera issues. I still followed the camera-related hints but that did not help
  • I cannot find any other reports on the internet - am I the only one with this problem?

Re: X1E2 Camera not working since Windows 1909 update

Hi !

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums.

Kindly check if the camera privacy is disabled in Lenovo Vantage Application.

If still the same, look in the BIOS on the Security Tab.  Select I-O port access.  Make certain that the camera isn't disabled.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Thank you for you answer. Camera privacy is of course disabled and camera access is enabled in the BIOS. Otherwise Windows wouldn't event be able to recognize or drive the camera and no LED would switch on when using the camera. As I have explained above, sometimes it even displays a frozen frame.

This seems like a driver issue as it always worked before the Windows 1909 upgrade, and never worked afterwards. No other settings have been changed.

Here is a screenshot with device manager, driver details, and camera app. I wanted to also post a video but this forum does not allow video file uploads.

When any application uses the camera, the following happens:

 * Camera LED goes on

 * If directly after boot (within the first few seconds after login in Windows), a few still frames (< 10) make it through, is an interval of a few seconds (so not a fluid video, also there is enough light so its not related to the camera shutter duration).

 * Camera preview screen is black (LED stays on until the app is closed or no longer accesses the camera)

 * Depending on the application, there's an error (in the screenshot you can see the error of the Windows Camera app when taking a picture)

Did you updated manually the camera driver? There's a updated driver on Lenovo's Webpage that claims 1903 compatibility.

Maybe it works with 1909 aswell. You haven't clarified what version had before the update.

Yes I tried it, it did not make a difference. Actually I think this is the same driver that was already preinstalled. The Windows version before the update was the version the notebook came with - since it's only been sold since after the 1903 release, it must have been version 1903.

Reinstalling Windows 1909 unfortunately also did not fix this issue.

Camera doesn't work in Ubuntu either, so I assume it's a hardware defect and will get a replacement.
