X1E2 and NVIDIA 27.21.14.5256 result in multiple BSoDs per day

2021-01-19, 14:35 PM

I have confirmed after two update attempts that on my X1 Extreme Gen 2, updating to NVIDIA driver 27.21.14.5256 release for Win10 1803 and newer results in multiple BSoDs per day. My system had been running solid as a rock before that, but after installing that update when prompted by Vantage, I started getting these BSoDs.  Some even happened overnight when I was asleep and all of my displays were on standby (but the system was still fully awake).  Reviews of dumps always implicated the same NVIDIA file.  So I uninstalled that driver and returned to version 27.21.14.5206, which in NVIDIA's versioning is 452.06.  I happened to have that installer around.  The BSoDs stopped.  Then a few weeks later I tried that same update again, and the same behavior occurred afterward.  And once again, uninstalling that release and installing the earlier version I just mentioned resolved the issue.

Hello jphughan,

Greetings

Thank you for sharing your experience as it would seem that the older display driver work on your system better, so rolling back appears to be a current solution.

You may likewise share your current BIOS so we can investigate further.

There is also a feedback button that you can use to send your ideas here in the support site.

Regards

Thanks for the reply. My BIOS release is 1.36. I just ran Lenovo Vantage and the only components that are out of date are the NVIDIA driver, as I described above, the firmware for my Lenovo TB3 Workstation Dock Gen 2, because updating that to the latest firmware caused other display issues that I explained in another thread. Everything else shows as current, so I'm wondering if any other X1E2 owners are having a similar issue. I have not yet tried installing the latest drivers available directly from NVIDIA, although I do see that they are slightly newer.

Jphug,

I have been running this driver on my vanilla X1EG2 (no external monitors, FHD HDR screen, GPU set to hybrid) for nine days. No issues whatsoever. But without an external monitor and under very light loads, my Nvidia GPU may never be kicking in. I am on the factory BIOS, 1.2x, pretty old now. These machines are too fragile to allow MS and Lenovo updates willy-nilly, IMO. I do mine one by one for problem isolation simplicity. Should not be so, but it is. Sermon, not meant for you, endeth.

Just a data point. GL.

Thanks Mikey. I suspect the external displays may be key here because the NVIDIA GPU has direct control of the external display outputs even in Hybrid mode (which only pertains to the built-in display), so the NVIDIA GPU is always active when external displays are involved, even if nothing graphics-intensive is going on. I too have moved away from updating for the sake of updating, but I opted for this update because it was rated as critical due to its release notes indicating that it contained security fixes. Had it not been for that, I likely wouldn't have bothered.
