Re: X200 ethernet card just "cannnot start"

Thanks. Actually no led light blinks with a working cable ...

I have had this since new (vista). I'm sure ethernet worked then, but haven't used it since long ago...

ThinkVantage toolbox/pc doctor doesn't report anything wrong though.

hmmm... no lights. ok.

for both this and your expresscard issue, let's try to rule windows out of the picture.

are you familiar with using a Linux live cd? if not, it's really quite simple. you download an iso, burn it to cd and boot. if you don't have access to an external optical drive, there are instructions on creating a bootable Linus USB stick that we can go through.

running Linux live won't make any changes to your hard drive (unless you tell it to install), but it will let you run the Linux system with pretty much full capability, albeit a little slow loading coming off a cd. if your devices work in Linux, we can refocus on what's causing problems in Windows. if they don't work, then it's better evidence that you have hardware problems that Service would need to address.

ubuntu has been recommended to me as having native expresscard support, so i'm downloading v12.04.1 LTS to look at on my x200t. do you need assistance with the process?

please let me know.

cheers!

Thanks. I really appreciate. OS wise: 1) I might have the harddrive I used with XP. I'll try to swap that in to give it a try 2) I have a Ubuntu live usb now. Device wise: had since new, but haven't used expresscard ever. used ethernet a couple years ago. No known incidents of lightening/static elec/etc (but never verified). Diagnostics: Is there any easy tool that one can run to verify the functioning of the expresscard slot? I'll report back about how things go with XP (if my hard drive still works) or Ubuntu (after I get a live USB running). thanks.

Well, bad news. Booted into Ubuntu live USB fine. The system doesn't see a wired connection at all, and no blinks at the ethernet socket either. ---- I suppose the ethernet card is just dead? The expresscard plugged in, the system doesn't seem to get aware of any new device either.

sorry to hear that.

it does now seem that you've got a hardware issue. from one of your earlier posts, it looks like you have/had a 3 year waranty. has it expired? here is the link with information on contacting Lenovo Service:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/feedback/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76613

which i think it's your best bet.

sorry we couldn't get the issues solved. we did try, though!

best regards.

3yr expired a few months ago .... same scenario as my previous Thinkpad ..... Fortunately, ethernet is not critical nowadays. Not sure the expresscard is related to the ethernet problem. I'm sure the expresscard audio card itself is good (works in another Thinkpad). Thanks for going through this!

Re: X200 ethernet card just "cannnot start" / X200 wired NIC is DEAD

2015-09-21, 19:34 PM

FYI -  one of my 2 X200's running  Win 7 Pro 64bit had its wired connection starting to go bad (often stopped working, then finally completely stopped working, even tho the lights would flash). I tried reinstalling the driver which helped temporarily, but then the same issue came back.

Swapping the drive to my other workinf X200, all's good, so this is a hardware issue on that X200.   So will use a USB dongle now when a wired connection is needed (any good advice,re best brand, let me know)
