X201 500GB HD almost full :(

2011-04-11, 6:12 AM

My new X201 is 500GB, W7/XP and my hard drive is almost full :(

I've performed C: cleanup, CCleaner & deleted all restore points.

C: properties are 420GB used, 34GB free.

Device Space Manager shows "Unscanned, 375.9GB, 82.64%, 560 files" & says "files are left unscanned due to access restrictions."

WinDirStat shows C: has an <unknown> file 381.6GB, 83.9% & free space is 34.7GB, 7.6%.

TreeSize shows C: is 39.7GB, with 34.6GB free space.  It has 2 files (RRbackups & System Volume Information) with an exclamation point inside a yellow circle & [Access is denied], 0GB each.

I use Rollback Rx, which has a 12/10/10 baseline of 333MB & a snapshot 4/6/11 that's 3563MB.

I also use Drive Cloner Rx, but it saves to an external hard drive.

How do I reclaim my disk space?

Thx, Gini

You need to do disk diffregment. For this you can you any disk diffregment software. "Tune UP" is good.

C: is 3% fragmented, Q: (Lenovo Recovery) is 0% fragmented & SYS_DRV is 1% fragmented.

Defrag of all 3 drives is complete (took less than 10 mn.).  C: is now 1%, Q: is 0% & SYS_DRV is 1%.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but, basically, the best way to recover free space is by deleting unused files, documents and software!

Do you mean that some free space is locked by a system error? Otherwise I'm afraid that there is very few that you can do other than deleting unused files ... or upgrading your hard drive.

Youo may consider the storage of personal data and documents on a memory stick or esterbal drive and leave only the necessary programs on the internal drive.

Gini,

Open windows explorer to show "Computer" (Win7), then go to menu "Tools", "Folder Options", select tab "View",

and for Hidden files, set "show hidden files". In the same place, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Now open the C: disk and see what is showing that you did not see before. Let us know.

I had already set those folder options, so nothing is shown differently.

What it boils down to is I have 39.7GB of programs, documents, files, etc., on a 500GB hard drive (that's 4 mo. old & not giving me any other trouble) & yet I only have 34.6GB free space.

This is my work laptop.  No email, no surfing, games, movies, etc.  Almost all of my files are stored on an external hard drive.

I'm at my wit's end :(

99% sure it's the RRbackups folder in C:. It's permissions are restricted by default, so it will not get enumerated in disk usage software.

Go to Rescue and Recovery and delete some of the older scheduled backups it makes. Be absolutely certain that you don't need those backups, just in case.

Is there a folder "RRbackups" at C: ? It will show up as 0 size due to access restrictions, but is the folder there? IF yes,

open Rescue and Recovery in Thinkvantage applications, switch to advanced interface, and "view backups", how much space total?

Also, in Control Panel -> System -> System protection, Is system restore enabled on C:? If yes, go to configure and see how much hidden space it is using?

Early on in this nightmare, I deleted all R&R backups.
