System Restore backups and TVTRNR accomplish similar tasks, but are by no means the same.

Is there a folder "RRbackups" at C: ?  Yes

It will show up as 0 size due to access restrictions, but is the folder there? IF yes, open Rescue and Recovery in Thinkvantage applications, switch to advanced interface, and "view backups", how much space total?  No backups found

Also, in Control Panel -> System -> System protection, Is system restore enabled on C:?  Yes

If yes, go to configure and see how much hidden space it is using?  Current Usage:  0 bytes  -  Max Usage:  2% (9.10 GB)

Get the Take Ownership registry file, take ownership of RRbackups and check inside.

Re: X201 500GB HD almost full :(

I've talked to Lenovo support (almost 2 hrs.!) & let the tech take over control.

The problem is in the system folder with the file <unknown> 381.6GB that takes up 83.9% of my hard drive.  According to him, it's highly likely that if this file were deleted, the space would be reclaimed.  However, he isn't allowed to tell me how to do that.  He said that a geek would know how.  It would involve going into the registry.

In WinDirStat, I tried right-clicking on the folder to see if I could simply delete it there, but there are no options to do so.  Anyone savy enough to understand this?

Failing that, I do have a baseline Rollback Rx snapshot taken 12/10/10.

As a last resort, I could reformat the hard drive :(   I'll clone it right now to an external hard drive.

There are no miracles. You either have files on the disk that take up the space, or you don't. If you do, find it, if you don't, you have a filesystem problem (or less likely a disk hardware problem.)

Step 1: run disk check that comes with windows. Right click on C: in the explorer, select properties, tools, "check now" for errors. Most likely it will offer to schedule the check at the next reboot, agree and reboot. Does the file system on C: pass the filesystem check?

Step 2: make sure you don't have hidden system restore files (this is windows system restore, not R&R, see my previous post earlier). Part of system restore can keep previous versions of files (ms stuff called "shadow copy") and that sometimes can run away. If you have it enabled and don't use it, turn it off completely and that should also delete all hidden copies.

Reboot. Any changes?

Step 3: hardware check. Assuming there is PC-doctor/Lenovo Toolbox pre-installed, it has in it somewhere a disk diagnostics program. Does the drive pass hardware diagnostics?

Step 4: if still no progress, Open command prompt in administrator mode (Start All programs - accessories -- right click command prompt, choose "run as administrator"). In it, go to where you think "unknown" file(s) is (are)

(cd c:\windows ?), and type "dir /a /s | more", anything funny?

You can re-install as much as you want, but what makes you think the problem won't come back? Find the problem.

Install the reg. Go to C:, right click RRbackups, Take Ownership.

Step 1: run disk check that comes with windows. Right click on C: in the explorer, select properties, tools, "check now" for errors. Most likely it will offer to schedule the check at the next reboot, agree and reboot. Does the file system on C: pass the filesystem check?  It appeared to run in the background upon reboot & didn't give any message, just started normally.

I earlier disabled system restore.  "No backups found."

Step 3: hardware check. Assuming there is PC-doctor/Lenovo Toolbox pre-installed, it has in it somewhere a disk diagnostics program. Does the drive pass hardware diagnostics?  Yes.

There are 2 files that stand out because of their size:

4-11-11  hiberfil.sys    3,060,518,912  (today's date)

12-3-10  pagefile.sys  4,080,713,728  (date I got this laptop)

I agree about needing to find and correct the problem so it won't come back :)
