X201 Memory upgrade

2010-10-25, 4:14 AM

X201, 3249CTO Laptop.  Win 7 Pro, 64 bit.

Presently have 4GB(2X2GB) of RAM memory installed. I'm comsidering upgrading to 6GB by replacing one of the 2GB RAM dcards with a 4GB card.

Does it matter which of the 2GB cards is replaced?  And will there be a problem having a 2GB and 4GB RAM card installed?

you can replace either one of the ram modules, it doesn't matter which one you change out.

Thanks for the fast reply.  Do you think that it's worth the money to go from 4GB RAM to 6GB, or would it be better to go to 8GB?

first off, welcome to the forum!

that would depend entirely on if you're currently using all 4GB and what you're planning to do that might use 6GB or 8GB.   if you aren't fully utilizing the 4GB that you have now, 6GB or 8GB will be a waste.

open task manager and click on the performance tab to see how much memory you're using.   this will tell you right away if you'd benefit from more memory.

I have installed 2+4GB in my X201s and it works fine (Although Memtest86+ shows slightly slower memory transfer rates vs 4+4GB in Dual Channel).
The only reason why I have 8GB is when I need to run some memory intensive simulations on the go.

Wiht 8GB I have no worries about disabling the Windows Page file :)

did you order the x220 with 2x2 gigs or 1x4 gigs. If you ordered it from Lenovo you can choose either.
