X201 Problems

2014-08-05, 22:01 PM

Hello,

I have a my lovely Thinkpad X201, sadly it is not working properly, everything is fine except for Keyboard Backlight (FN+PgUp - that doesnt work), microphone and green status lights above Power Button (+ when I change brightness with FN+Home that grey message displaying brightness changes sadly dissapeared after I did (for the first time) updates from ThinkVantage Toolbox -> System Update (it worked before I've done the update).

When I was buying the laptop I did not think of checking these things (refurbished laptop).

I have 1.40 bios & have installed microphone drivers, same goes for HotKey driver.

And I do not seem to find an option to enable keyboard light in BIOS. (Might be a hardware problem, just not sure yet)

I did search through forums to find answers to these questions but sadly none of them worked for me.

I hope that you guys will help me.

I am thinking of calling Lenovo support and maybe calling some computer repair service if they could help me, yet that will probably cost so I'd like to try to fix it myself.

Regards

Welcome to the forum!

ThinkLight (Fn+PgUp) should work regardless of software (not) installed, so you're looking at a hardware problem there.

As for the OSD, do you have the Power Manager installed?

Cheers,

George

I do have Power Manager installed (I even reinstalled it), the OSD is enabled as well, yet nothing shows, thinking of reinstalling whole system + lenovo updates all over.

Thanks anyway.

x201 LCD 44C9991 LED backlight cable thinklight stock pic-small.2.jpgHi, I have about four x200 and x201 machines (of about 15 purchased recently) on which keyboard light (thinklight) <FN>+ <PgUp> does not work. So you're not alone. It's unfortunately a point of weakness on these models. I purchase corporate surplus inventory. As I doubt they came with this defect from the factory, at some point the thinklight function of these LCD cables fails. (The thinklight itself is a thin extension of the LCD cable at the top: see sample Internet search picture of x201 LED type cable on left).

One obvious thing: Make sure your <PgUp> key itself works as <FN>+<PgUp> combo won't work if <PgUp> doesn't work. This is another common weakness in x200/ x201 series: flaky keyboards, with <PgUp>, POWER button, or arrow keys sometimes failing. Otherwise nice laptops, so I just keep a few extra keyboards and LCD cables on hand (if fixing it up for someone who likes to use the keyboard light).

Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

Alright man, thanks for the reply, I will surelly buy a new LCD cable soon or later. I just like my stuff to work 100%.

Is there a possibility that the ThinkLight is just not plugged in?

+ Is microphone a known issue as well? I have drivers installed + the mic is detected - just nothing else, doesn't detect any sound.

Nope, it's part of the cable

How about the microphone? If it is detected (yet doesn't work) does it mean that its plugged in properly?
If it is, I guess that disassembly of this laptop is pointless.

I would try running a Linux distro from a live USB stick and check if the mic works there, just to rule out a software problem.

The mic is integrated on the LED board IIRC, so it can't be a case of a loose connection.

I've got Lubuntu installed as 2nd system, and it doesn't work there either.
I guess that I bought a faulty laptop;/

Is there a way to replace the microphone? I dunno if I gotta replace a whole panel or something, the LCD cable is quite expensive so I guess that it is not worth replacing for now, as I'm planning to buy X220 soon or later.

How about the indicator lights above the Power On/Off button? What could be the cause of them not working at all?

I think your LED board may be toast!

A LED board is not expensive, and you only need to remove the LCD bezel to swap it. The LED cable will take more work, and it shouldn't be expensive either (I see Ebay prices around 25/30 GBP)

The HMM can be downloaded from here: click me!

  • You'll see the instructions how to swap the LED board on chapter 2020, page 113
  • You'll see the instructions how to swap the LED cable on chapter 2050, page 117
  • You'll see the FRU numbers for the LED cable and LED board starting on page 228

All page numbers refer to the ones printed in the document, not necessary the ones your PDF viewer will show

Hope this helps!

Edit: one more thing, could you please post two details here?

1) Your 7 digit model number of your laptop (is in a black and white sticker on the bottom)

2) Try to read your screen model using a software like HWInfo, SIW or similar
