X201s: can you install a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN?

2010-04-03, 18:08 PM

Can I install a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN in my X201s?  Unclear from Lenovo website.  Appears that I could purchase the WAN card as an accssory and install it, but it wasn't an option when I bought the laptop.  I'd prefer internal WAN card rather than a USB or Express 3G card.  Any info or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Hi jontalotta, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

The answer depends on the screen type. WXGA X201s's have a WAN antenna in the lid. WXGA+ X201's do not (at least as of today).

The LCD parts lists in the X201s Hardware Maintenance Manual show this.

Hope this helps!

Thanks bananaman.  I do have the X201s with WXGA+ 1440x900 resolution and 3x3 internal antenna display.

As to the WWAN antenna issue you mentioned, what does the "3x3 internal antenna" designation mean?  Maybe I misunderstood the sales rep, but  I was under the impression that the 2x2 internal antenna meant you could only have two internal connection capabilities among Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WWAN, and that 3x3 internal antenna meant you could have all three.  Was I mistaken about that?  Does the "3x3" designation relate only to Wi-Fi reception?

Alas, I did not realize at the time I purchased to X201s that it was an either or decision in terms of internal WWAN capability between the X201 and X201s.  I did not get the X201 because it was limited to the WXGA 1280x800 display.  I made the right choice for me, however, because I am very happy with the 1440x900 display, the X201s is plenty fast and has amazing battery life, and suppose I still have the option to purchase a USB or PC Card WWAN.

3x3 and 2x2 refer to the WiFi MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) architecture i.e. 3 transmit x 3 receive etc. In theory 3x3 gives better performance than 2x2.
