X220 CPU temperature

My X220 idles between 60 and 70C, and jumps to 95 C under load. I have a hard time believing this is normal, but it seems some people with these machines see similar results (perhaps much lower idling temperatures with similar load temps). I searched and found a few previous posts, but has anyone been able to get this repaired under warranty? The lenovo customer support rep was about as useless as me calling the white house -- they only have access to online help guides and the hardware / maintenance manual mentions nothing about average or acceptable temps. I shouldn't be able to burn myself while idling, let alone cook an egg while under load!

Re: X220 CPU temperature

I just tested my X220 i7, I ran prime95 for 10 minutes, and looked at the temp using HWInfo64.

At full load for 10 minutes, the temp maxed out at 91-93C. Then after cooling for about 5 minutes, it settled around 42-43C.

This is using the Max Performance setting in power manager while on AC power.

Re: X220 CPU temperature

[ Edited ]

an idle temp of 60-70C is high.

My i7 idles at 50-55C on a dock with two monitors connected (90W adapter).  When on AC power (65 watt) off the dock it idles at 45C.

What peripherals do you have connected?  What performance settings?  Ambient temps? Is the fan spinning up appropriately? If temps have gotten progressively worse over time, have you tried dusting off the fan?

Re: X220 CPU temperature

Idle should be around 50C, depending on your room temperature.

If you stress test it with LinX (2 threads + AVX MKL) it should reach 97C easily and start throttling. I've tested 2 laptop samples from different batches and all the same.

Re: X220 CPU temperature

Did this ever get resolved? I have the same problem.

My is a 2 year old x220 (i5) w/ updated BIOS and PM. My idle temp is @ 60-70.

Re: X220 CPU temperature

Nope. My laptop idles at 65 all day every day and spools up to 85-90 when it's under load. No problems, so far. (knock on wood)
