I know me too finally I had a moment where the light came on and I thought this might be the case.

The driver is failing to activating the driver the computer doesn't seem to understand that the driver belongs to that device.

Thanks, thanks, again, THANKS !!!!

I researched this for the last 2 days, and absolutely your answer IS the RIGHT thing to do it, without even the need to restart the X220. The ricoh's driver was working before the I did Fedora's 21 dual-boot install. Then, on Fedora, everything was fine but back t windows 7, gosh, the SD reader was lost. Absolutely AWESOME, thank you so much!

In Device Manager, click the view tab and check Show Hidden Devices.  You'll find the Ricoh device by expanding Storage Controllers.  Lenovo updated the driver for the Ricoh card reader in June 2015 (Rev 2) and you can find it here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds032126

I downloaded and ran the update and it solved my problem on a X220 refurb I bought summer of '16.  Hope this helps.

The default driver package included in recovery and avalible for download for my X220 called "8ass82ww.exe" didn't work for my system.

I still had a "Base System Device" listed in device manager, even after running all Windows and Lenovo updates.

I ended up modifying the risdxc.inf to include the following:

[Ricoh]
%R5U822Desc%=R5U822_Inst,PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822
%R5U822Desc%=R5U822_Inst,PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822&SUBSYS_21DA17AA

[Ricoh.ntamd64]
%R5U822Desc%=R5U822_Inst.ntamd64,PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822
%R5U822Desc%=R5U822_Inst.ntamd64,PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822&SUBSYS_21DA17AA

This allowed the card to work fine.  I wonder if they've recently changed the multicard reader for this system?  It's a 4286-CTO.

Thank you very much.

What interesting that it was working alright without the hack but one day suddenly the drivers stopped working. This solution saved the day
