X220 - FAN NOT WORKING?

2013-11-13, 18:10 PM

I have an older x220 laptop.  I'm concerned the fan is not working.  It doesn't seem to turn on (ever).  How can I test it?  Any suggestions on video/tutorial for replacing it (if necessary)?

I was sitting w/ my laptop in bed last night and noticed it seemed very hot.  I downloaded a temperature program and it was running 90-92 degrees.  The fan never seems to turn on.  I don't know if it's because I'm missing a driver when I wiped the PC and loaded Windows 8 or what.  Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks for your time ! :smileyvery-happy:

Assuming it is not a tablet, the manual is here:

If it is running that hot, you need to do something. The fan is under the motherboard, so it needs complete disassembly. If you are taking it apart, I would replace the fan without much testing. BTW, a machine will run hotter on a soft surface, like a bed.
