X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

'evening.

continuing from my so-far-so-good experience with a crucial mSATA ssd in my x220:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/mSATA-SSD-for-my-beloved-X220/m-p/816771#M3993...

i'm working through all of the windows and driver updates and system update is offering me an update to the IRST driver. the x220 factory image installs v10.1.0.1008 while su is listing v11.2.0.1006 dated june 2012. i'm pretty happy with the sdd and hdd performance of the system right now, especially the ssd, and don't want to muck things up.

the readme is quite vague about the update:

[New functions or enhancements]
- Device Driver Functionality Enhancement.

though a couple of the versions betwwen my current and the most recent look to be worthwhile.

so... has anyone installed the newest version? and... did you see any improvements or, alternatively, problems?

thanks in advance.

Re: X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

Hello,

I don't know what that particular fix is for certain, but when I have seen, well, vague descriptions like that, I usually assume it means either functionality was added to support an as-yet-unannounced product (which, in Intel's case, perhaps means a chipset or CPU), or to fix some kind of minor issue, like a text string.

Perhaps if you were to contact Intel directly you could find out more about the change?

Regards,

thanks for replying, Aryeh.

doubtful they'd talk to me... i'm just a lowly end user. ;-)

the vaguery though, comes from lenovo's readme, so i thought maybe someone here would have insight.

cheers!

Re: X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

Hello,

Many years ago, I called Intel tech support once to replace a fan with an integrated CPU.  It took a while to do—apparently this was a bit out of their normal range of replies for the scripts that they use, but eventually I got a replacement fan sent to me.  These days, Intel has a large presence online, including the Intel Support Community for Solid State Drives.  I would imagine if you posted a question there someone would be able to answer it.

Re: X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

Hello,

That, as they say, is a good question!  I'm not sure which version is on it, so let me check...

It is v11.2.0.1006, dated 5/30/2012.  I have not noticed any problems with it since it was installed (around mid-July).

Re: X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

Hi, Sarbin. Could you tell me how you installed the RST? I also bought a crucial msata ssd for my x230, but haven't figured out how to use it as a cache. Many thanks!

the driver was being offered to me through system update. i just allowed it to do its "thing". Smiley Wink

presuming you've got an x220, but don't see it in su, the driver matrix here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77280

shows the irst drivers here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014958 (32bit) or

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014898 (64bit)

which could be manually installed (details at links above).

Re: X220: Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver

Thank you Sarbin. I installed the driver in the way you provided. However, I did not see any improvement from the Windows Experience Index. Is there anything else that you have done with your laptop? I am considering this method: http://forum.notebookreview.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=8748584 ; see freedomofchoice's post.
