X220 - Plastic Standoff Pads Scratch Palmrest, Create Creak

2011-10-07, 13:21 PM

Hi,

The Plastic Standoff Pads on the top of my x220 screen bezel are making scratch marks on my palmrest.  It is not aesthetically a major problem, however, the "digging in" of the pads to the armrest create creaking noises when the closed X220 is held in areas anywhere near where the pads touch the palmrest.

I know the sounds are coming from the pad-on-palmrest contact as if I place a plastic bag between pad and armrest and then close the lid and hold the unit in the same manners that previously would create the sounds, the creaks do not occur.

I know this is more cosmetic sounding then utility, but it is annoying to have the computer creak when held.  I am thinking of perhaps putting small rubber adhesive pads on the palmrest where the plastic pads hit the unit.

Do others have the same type of scenario caused by the plastic standoff pads on their X220?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

i usually just put a piece of paper between the screen and the keyboard, problem solved. My X220 doesn't have this problem, but some early build may have this.

The pads on my X220 all have a nice rubbery feeling, and they dont make any markings or creaking noises when closed.

Thanks for the feedback.  This is odd because my x220 build is from August, so it's not an early build by any stretch.

I will take the PC into a Lenovo authorized repairer for them to have a look.  The standoff pads actually cut a hole through a piece of paper when inserted between screen and palmrest.

Hi,

Me too have these marks on the palmrest caused by the standoff pads.

I doubt there will be no mark if you often go out and carry your X220 in a bag (especially when the bag is small and tight, or with a lot of other stuff).  From the design, I would say these marks are inevitable.  Unless you use your X220 only at home/in office, as desktop, never take out, there might be no marks or just very little.

I would be glad if they designed it differently and there's no such issue as palmrest scratching.

Don't understand why Lenovo design in this way.

Whoever thought of installing all this cheap plastic all over the place must be a genius. "But it will be lighter!" I just can't trust Thinkpad's quality anymore.

I have small rectangular rubber pad on the lid between the lid-top and the screen.

There is NO marks at all palm-rest and i am carrying it around most of the day - i have NO where gaps or other misalignment of any cabinet parts.

My X220 is from may 2011.

To the people saying they dont have this...

The problem is not with the rubber pads, we all have those too, its the small round dimples along the top edge of the screen that leave dents along the sloped front edge of the palm rest.

Mine doens't concern me too much, although at the bottom of the trackpad, the contact is very close to the edge and might eventually cause a crack (like it did on my previous macbook)

I think I may know why some x220s may exhibit this while others do not.

If you close the lid of your x220, the lid does not line up flush with the bottom palmrest area ... the palmrest sticks out just a bit.  So the curve of the lid and the curve of the palmrest do not perfectly align.

I took at a look at my old T61 and the lid and chassis perfectly align where both curve.

So I'm guessing that the lid should be slightly bigger, or it's being fastened a bit low to the computer itself.

I am like you in that it doesn't bother me all that much aesthetically.  It's the touchpad area that concerns me, plus the sound the plastic makes when scraping against the palmrest, which it does if you hold the computer anywhere near the area.
