X220 - Restore from R&R backup onto formatted drive

2011-06-11, 10:09 AM

My x220 seems to have a broken MBR. I have tried every suggestion I could find on the internet to fix it (Lenovo R&R USB HDD backup, bootrec fixmbr and fixboot in Windows PE, Parted Magic LiveOS, EasyBCD, installing GRUB) but nothing seems to work. The best I have done is get to a GRUB command line from where I can boot into Windows.

I have a R&R backup on a USB HDD (which successfully boots into Lenovo R&R). I would like to completely format the x220's hard drive, thus killing the MBR and all partitions, and then restore from the backup, creating a new MBR in the process. Will this work? I do not have a DVD drive for this laptop which seems to make things trickier.

This thread indicates that I would need two(!) USB HDDs AND a DVD drive. I would rather avoid buying another HDD and a DVD drive just for this problem. However that thread is almost 2 years old, maybe R&R works differently now?

Step-by-step instructions to fix the MBR without formatting would be awesome, but I think I've already tried all the options.

hey jwaddell,

could you explain more when you said "seems to have broken MBR" ?

Can it boot into windows or you can only boot in windows using a GRUB command ? (i'm guessing you use a linux disc to do so)

If you are booting into Windows through GRUB you can probably fix the MBR. One of the tools here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ or http://www.ubcd4win.com/ may be able to help you.

If you have a USB optical drive, have you tried running Windows 7 Startup Repair?

If that doesn't find any partitions, you can try a more aggressive rebuild of the Win7 BCD.  Though I realize you are likely not dealing with any sort of malware, my advice in the following topic (I am the TC) still applies:

Hope this helps.
